Despite a glittering career on the PGA Tour, Phil Mickelson has become one of the many villains in the eyes of the golf community. Indeed, it was his reported $200 million mega-move to the LIV Golf Series that played a convincing role for others to follow suit. But the downfall wasn’t as straightforward. Mickelson re-wrote record books with his stunning victory at the Kiawah Island to win his sixth major championship in 2021. The victory sparked hopes of a comeback from the veteran golfer, who jumped back inside the top 100 after dropping out earlier.

Will Mickelson revive himself at the world rankings?

A lot has changed since Mickelson was ranked less in the standings. In January 1991, the amateur golfer, who was still in college at that time, was ranked 462nd in the world. Shortly later, he won the Northern Telecom Open in Tucson, Arizona, which propelled him all the way to 164th in the world rankings.

But can Mickelson rekindle his early form in the twilight of his career? While it remains unlikely, LIV Golf’s struggles with gaining ranking points have made it an improbable task.
