Rory McIlroy is close friends with Tiger Woods. The Brit is living the dream of being on talking terms with his idol. But does his bond with the golf legend have any repercussions? Apparently, yes, with McIlroy’s wife, Erica Stoll, not in favor of Woods’ unusual habit.

In a candid interview, McIlroy once spoke about his close friendship with Tiger Woods, while revealing a few facts which were unknown to the world. The current World No. 1 spoke of Woods as an “intriguing” and “thoughtful” character but believed he struggled to sleep due to over-training.

“He’s smart. He reads. He can’t sleep, so that’s all he does – he reads stuff and educates himself on everything. But he struggles to sleep, which I think is an effect of overtraining, so I tell him to calm down sometimes,” McIlroy said.

However, Woods’ inadequate sleep means he’s up late at night. While it was completely normal for him, it wasn’t the same case for the McIlroy household. “He’d be texting me at four o’clock in the morning: ‘Up lifting. What are you doing?’” McIlroy revealed. While he didn’t complain, his better half had evident issues with the strange habit.

“Erica actually got pi**ed off with it,” McIlroy said. “He was texting me in the middle of the night, and I was like, ‘Tiger is in the gym.’” For the unversed, Erica Stoll is McIlroy’s better half. The couple married in April 2017.

McIlroy reveals the different sides of Tiger Woods

In the same segment, the British golfer gave an insight into Woods and his multi-personality. “He’s an intriguing character because you could spend two hours in his company and see four different sides to him,” McIlroy said.

The 33-year-old also praised Woods’ faith in a trustworthy companion. “When he’s comfortable and he trusts you – and his trust is way [higher] than mine – he’s great. He’s thoughtful.”

Late-night texts or not, McIlroy and Woods share a close bond nonetheless. The pair will team up for the seventh edition of ‘The Match’ at the Pelican Golf Club, to be played in the second week of December.
