Last year, the golf world split in two with the emergence of LIV Golf. Since then a chasm has ripped open between the two sides, and right on the edge of the PGA Tour one stands Rory McIlroy. He has by far been the most outspoken Tour pro in the war against the PGA Tour. And as per a recent revelation, he has even badmouthed one of the greats of the sport and the biggest LIV star, Phil Mickelson, in the fast-approaching documentary series.

But the series, as per bunkered, may just have led to widening the chasm further. The series, of course, was shot in 2022, during golf’s most controversial period. Emotions ran high during the time on both sides, and golfers were constantly lashing out at each other. In the series, world no. 2 does exactly that.

At the 2022 Tour Championship, the Irishman is seen getting a massage and talking about the Buffalo Bills quarterback, Josh Allen. “Yeah, but he’s a Phil Mickelson, so…” said the golf pro while talking to the other players about the NFL star’s interest in golf. And yet, that subtle dig at the 6-time major winner was just not enough for McIlroy. “F**k you, Phil! I hope that makes it in,” he said, knowing very well that filming was going on. It seems like your prayer has been answered, Rory!

Patrick Reed also suffers from McIlroy’s wrath
In the series, the golf pro admits to taking players’ defections to the Breakaway Tour to heart. “I’ve maybe leaned in to that part of it a little bit too much and made it too personal in my mind,” he said. “I’m just trying to defend what I think is right.” And McIlroy certainly didn’t let anything stand in the way of speaking out for his beliefs.

But if people think that the 23-time PGA Tour has turned over a new leaf since then, they’d be wrong. Following his highly controversy-filled week playing the Dubai World Classic, he spoke to a reporter about Patrick Reed’s fall in OWGR points despite placing second. “Beautiful, beautiful,” he smugly described it. McIlroy clearly feels th3e same way about LIV golfers as he did a year ago.
