The recently turned professional golfer was born in Arcadia, California. She was born to Haibin Zhang and Li Cai on May 24, 2003. She has a brother who is 10 years older than her. In her free time, the golfer likes to read and engage in other sports.

How did she start golfing? 

At the age of nine, Zhang started her golf journey when a family friend brought some clubs for her father. Intrigued by the equipment, she decided to try it out in her own backyard.

Surprisingly, on her third attempt, she struck the ball perfectly. Recognizing her potential, Zhang’s father promptly organized golf lessons for her. 

What does her coach think about her? 

Impressed by her skills, the head coach at Stanford University described Zhang as “the Mozart of golfand “the Van Gogh of golf.”

The most crucial attribute of Zhang’s game 

Her ability to swing is one of her biggest characteristics as a golfer. She has worked really hard on her swing since the age of 11. Her swing coach is George Pinnell, who has helped her excel at her swing shot.

The new professional golfer had shared in the past that she really admires Lydia Ko. It is her down-to-earth and real nature that she really admires. Rose Zhang has described Ko as a super nice and genuine person.

Zhang hails from Stanford University, the same as golf legend Tiger Woods. In 2023, she won the NCAA Division I Women’s Championship, which helped her surpass the number of wins Woods had as a college golfer. As mentioned in The New York Times, with this record, she also became the first golfer ever to win two NCAA individual titles.

A young golfer’s amateur grand slam

In April, Zhang achieved a notable win at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur Tournament. This victory allowed her to accomplish a significant feat in women’s amateur golf by completing the equivalent of a career Grand Slam. Prior to this achievement, Zhang had already secured victories in the U.S. Women’s Amateur, the U.S. Girls’ Junior, and an individual N.C.A.A. title while representing Stanford University.

Rose Zhang’s notable career moments 

Zhang competed in the 2019 US Women’s Open; she was just 16 at the time. Zhang was named Girls Rolex Junior Player of the Year in 2019 and 2020. She also represented Team USA in the Curtis Cup in 2021 and 2022. The 20-year-old won the Mark H. McCormack Medal for top world amateur golfer three times in succession from 2020 to 2022. When she was playing in the Carmel Cup in 2022 at Pebble Beach, she set the record with nine under, during the second round.

 Yet another record in Zhang’s name

Along with records on the green, Zhang has another ranking record attached to her name. In April 2023, she will have been ranked as the top amateur golfer in the world for 141 weeks. Before her, the golfer who had this record was Leona Maguire, who was ranked number 1 for 135 weeks.
