Despite receiving most of his fame due to Woods, the caddie highly credits Greg Norman for turning him into the person he is. According to him, it was the Australian golfer who brought him into the professional caddie business. But despite having a great time working with Norman, Williams once denied an offer from the shark.

In an interview with Graham Bensinger, Steve explained how the LIV CEO tried to rehire him. But to his surprise, Williams said no to his offer. “I’m a very loyal sort of a person” the caddie reasoned. “From Greg Norman, I was very fortunate to go and carry for Raymond Floyd…Carrying for another guy that was extremely good to me, and Greg wanted me to go back and carry for him.”

According to Williams, he found it very hard to quit working with someone just because he had another better offer. He also explained how he developed a deep bond with Norman, but it eventually got in the way of their professional relationship. And so, when he finally started working with Floyd, he couldn’t leave for Norman’s rehiring offer. “I couldn’t let Ray down,” he said. “He’d been so good to me, I had no reason to leave him. He’d been exemplary to me. Him and his family took me in too…I was just loyal, I couldn’t do it.”
