In recent times, it seems like the golf world hasn’t been able to agree on anything. The emergence of LIV Golf marked the biggest divide that the sport has ever witnessed. Ever since then, every decision and rule made by the officials and authorities has had many supporters and just as many opposers. And now yet another debate has arisen in the sport, and the one-time major winner, Jon Rahm, is afraid that this hot topic too might cause a “huge divide.”
Jon Rahm voices his grave concerns
The distance debate has been in discussion in the golf world for the last couple of years. Just a few days ago, the USGA and the R&A came up with a solution for it. They proposed Model Local Rule (MLR), giving event organizers the option of making professionals use golf balls that travel a shorter distance compared to regular ones for selected events.

The new rule caused an uproar amongst many fans and players alike. Many, including Jon Rahm, made sure to point out that they were not entirely supportive of the rule. And recently, the Spaniard added to his initial comments, expressing a grave concern about this distance debate solution.
Following his splendid victory on the second day of the WGC-Match Play, during the post-round interview, the 10-time PGA Tour winner was asked if he thought the rollback rule would be implemented at the major championships. The golf pro explained that whether they did or not depended entirely on what the Tours decided. He added that if the Tour and the majors disagreed, it would be extremely problematic.

Rahm hopes for a unanimous decision
The former US Open Champion explained that he feared there was yet another split in the golf world about the matter. “I find it hard to believe as well that the majors would go completely against what the professional tours decide to do,” he stated. “And, if that were to happen, that would set a huge divide in the game of golf that is just not good for anybody.”

He claimed that yet another division would only cause more problems in the sport. The Spanish great could only hope that the major championships and the Tours would both agree on the decision. Be it for or against the rollback. But only time will tell if that is the case.
