Back in 2019, Rory McIlroy had an excellent year on the PGA Tour. The pro won 4 trophies that year. His superb performance also won him another trophy for his brilliant performance that year. And he was presented it by the “man himself,” Jack Nicklaus. The golf legend heartwarmingly surprised McIlroy in a well elaborated plan. And the victor certainly hadn’t seen it coming.

The PGA great had won 2 events on the Tour, The Canadian Open and The Players Championship, and his performances also won him the Byron Nelson award, for finishing 14 times in the top 10. In addition to that Rory won the Tour Championship that year, and took home the FedEx Cup.

Jack Nicklaus tricks the World’s No. 1 golfer
Back in 2019, the golf legend, Jack Nicklaus surprised Rory McIlroy, by calling him over for lunch. As the two sat down, Nicklaus told him that they were filming “a day in my life.” An intrigued Rory happily took the chair next to him as they began talking, completely unaware of what was to follow.

As the two began speaking, people started bringing out trophies and laying them on the table. McIlroy looked bewildered, but Nicklaus reassured him saying, “They do this to me all the time, they just bring these things out.” 3 more trophies followed the first, all of whom belonged to McIlroy, with the name facing away from him so that he wouldn’t notice.

But the world rank one soon was beginning to realize that something was off. And that’s when the fifth and final trophy came out. It was the Player of the year award, which is the Jack Nicklaus Trophy. McIlroy looked at Jack and said, “that’s you”. He then added, “I already got 2 of those” while staring at it in wonder. Nicklaus responded and said, “you got three now, congratulations.”

Nicklaus leaves Rory McIlroy speechless
McIlroy was stunned, and said, “really?” and as everyone applauded, he added, “I’ve got goosebumps.” All the dumbfounded winner could manage was a “wow.” He stated, “that’s completely taken me by surprise I had no idea.” Rory’s peers on the course had voted for him to receive the award, and evidently, no one else deserved it more than him that year.

The World number one also added that it was incredibly “special” to receive the award for the third time, and “from the man himself” nonetheless. Nothing could have made him happier at the moment. He fumbled for words as he thanked them for he knew would certainly remember that day for the rest of his life.
