The Masters Tournament last week brought with it the hype for the major championships in golf. With it now finished, fans are only looking forward to the next three majors. And considering how competitive and entertaining the Augusta event was, the expectations are certainly high. Amid that excitement, the most recent update about the US Open is bound to leave fans in awe and add even more thrill to their wait. But perhaps the defending champion, Matthew Fitzpatrick, will not feel the same way. After all, the news may not bode well for him!
The competition grows for Matthew Fitzpatrick
Last year, the Englishman dominated at the major, beating Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris by a stroke. Following a brilliant four rounds, the golf pro took home the coveted US Open Trophy after carding a total score of 274—six under par.

But as tough as it was for Fitzpatrick to grab the win last year, it may certainly be even tougher this year. The reason for that is the competition. The US Open is, of course, one of the most competitive golf events in the world, but this year they’ve taken it to a whole new level. As per Golf Digest, the USGA recently revealed that more than 10,000 people are coming after the trophy!

This year, a record-breaking 10,187 applications were accepted by the USGA for the major at Los Angeles Country Club. This is 60 more entries than in 2014, which stood at 10,127 and held the previous record. Of these, of course, only a select few will make it onto the course for the event in June. But the battle before the war will certainly be exciting!

Could Fitzpatrick be feeling intimidated?
Putting it bluntly, of course, he could. He is going on to try and defend one of the most prestigious golf events in the sport. And now with the competition on the rice, he will undoubtedly be certain that it won’t be a cakewalk.

Eventually, only 156 golfers will take to the course in the middle of June, and only one will be victorious. Of that total field, 52 players have already earned a spot through their exemptions. This includes the likes of the recent Masters Champion, Jon Rahm, and the Augusta runners-up, Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson. It’s safe to say that the reigning champion has his work cut out for him!
