Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson share probably one of the most incredible rivalries in golf. Both the American professionals have a tremendous amount of respect for each other but always want to compete with one another for a win. Woods’ former caddie recently revealed why the 15-time major championship winner and Phil weren’t paired together more often.

Steve Williams and Tiger both shared a strong relationship as caddie and professional. The duo was together from 1999 until they parted ways in 2011. Williams played a crucial role in Woods’ win at the 1999 PGA Championship. On top of that, the 46-year-old professional also achieved the Tiger Slam in 2000, when he won three of the remaining major championship events, and then in 2001, he won the Masters tournament.

Williams caddied for Woods in his 13 major championship titles. Moreover, Williams stayed with Tiger through all the highs and lows of the World Golf Hall of Fame member’s career.

Steve recently made a striking revelation about Phil and Woods’ rivalry. He spoke about why they often were not paired together in the latest episode of the podcast Chasing Majors.

He spoke about the same while talking about Tiger’s win at the 2006 PGA Championship. He said, “What sort of happens on TV plays a major role in the golf business. And of course, they provide the major funding for the Tour. So if you have your two players who are the most valuable to your TV ratings playing together, and they’re playing together in the morning, then no one’s watching TV in the afternoon. And if they’re playing in the afternoon, no one’s watching TV in the morning.”

He added, “So invariably, just about every tournament that those two would play one guy is playing in the morning and one guy’s playing in the afternoon because those are the two guys so the marquee guys that get the big TV ratings.”

Williams’ words prove the amount of attention both the professionals got in golf. At the same time, it means how maybe they would run the show during all the PGA Tour events. It is just incredible to hear.

Tiger Woods’ heroics at the 2006 PGA Championship

Tiger claimed another major championship title at the 2006 PGA Championship in Medinah. It was Woods’ third PGA Championship title and 12th major championship victory. He won the event with an overall score of 18-under-par. As a result, the 82-time PGA Tour winner won with a comfortable five-shot margin after the final round. Furthermore, he carded a final round of four-under-par, 68 to cement his position on the top of the leaderboard.

His final round of 68 included only one birdie and all pars on the opening nine holes on Sunday. As a result, Tiger moved out in one-under-par, 35. He made three birdies and one bogey on the back nine to win the major championship event emphatically. Shaun Micheel finished as the runner-up to Woods. He ended the event with an overall score of 13-under-par and had to settle for a solo second position finish.
