It is a popular phenomenon that the wives of PGA Tour pros aren’t aware of the sport. Justin Thomas and Scottie Scheffler doubled down on the rumor by claiming both of their wives had either ‘zero’ or ‘very low’ knowledge of golf.

Nonetheless, Melody Spaun, wife of J.J., varies from the rest. While accompanying her husband at the Kapalua Plantation Golf Course, Melody shared a psychological rule that most golfers may have not been aware of, including her husband.

Mrs. Spaun isn’t your regular PGA Tour wife

J.J. dazzled in the first round of the Sentry Tournament of Champions after ending the first day tied for 2nd position. The LA-born golfer recorded 9 birdies, earning him a 14 under-par score. Following an incredible round in Maui, Hawaii, Spaun has some words to share, mostly for his wife.

According to J.J., he was told by his better half that he only had 300 minutes to give his best at the Kapalua Plantation Golf Course. “It was good,” he said on Thursday. “Maybe I should stick to it. Five hours allotment of like, OK, you get five hours. You got to be back by this time, because sometimes I can get like stuck out here for a long time”.

The reporter asked the three-time PGA Tour winner if the 5-hour rule would add more pressure on him. J.J. Spaun replied, “Yeah, so it kind of makes me productive. I don’t mess around and fraternize or socialize with everyone. Kind of just do my thing. Get it in there.”

Though some may question the weird rule, it did work out in the favor of J.J. After following the rule addressed to him by his wife, Spaun now looks to find himself in contention to win the Sentry Tournament of Champions. Perhaps all he has to do is to follow the 300-second rule and continue playing the way he is.
