Dale Whitnell’s untold story

Born on August 9, 1988, in Colchester, England, Dale Whitnell fancied golf at a young age. While he hasn’t revealed the exact time he started playing the sport, he did have a successful amateur career. Back in 2006, when Whitnell was 18, he captured the Abu Dhabi Junior Championship. Interestingly, that was the same year when 17-year-old Rory McIlroy also won the European Amateur Championship.

His association with the biggest names in golf doesn’t end there. In 2009, still an amateur golfer, Whitnell was a part of the Great Britain & Ireland team for the Walker Cup. Tommy Fleetwood was one of his teammates in the tournament. Unfortunately, they didn’t have a great time in the tournament that year, losing with a score of 9 1/2 to 16 1/2 to the Team US. But if you look at the opposition, you would understand why Team GB & Ireland suffered a loss. The American squad featured Rickie Fowler, Brian Harman, and LIV Golf’s Peter Uihlein. In fact, Fowler & Whitnell also came face-to-face in a foursomes contest, one that the Englishman lost by 5 & 6.

Soon after, Whitnell turned pro and played in various Tours across the globe. He also qualified for the 2012 Open Championship. The 36-year-old shared the field with Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, John Daly, Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickelson, and the eventual winner of the major event, Ernie Els. Interestingly, Whitnell beat Garcia and Mickelson to make the cut that weekend. He also finished 21 ranks above Daly by the end of the tournament. The English golfer finished at 60th, tied with McIlroy and others in the first and only major appearance of his career. He also had the opportunity to qualify for the Open Championship in 2010, 2011, and 2013. Unfortunately, he didn’t make the final qualification list to join the field once the tournament teed off in each of those years.

It took him 10 years to get the first taste of victory at this level when he won the 2019 KPMG Trophy. He did so by beating fellow Englishman Laurie Canter in the playoffs round. Soon enough, but after an 11-year wait as a pro, Whitnell received his DP World Tour card in 2020. With that, there years later, he won the 2023 Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed. He did so by beating the likes of Paul Waring and other big names in Europe. Whitnell gained confidence to go all in at the Ullna Golf and Country Club after a magnificent 96-yard eagle putt in the first round. He carried the momentum throughout the 4-day event, with his best performance coming in the second round, where he scored a tournament-best 11-under par 61.

Two years later, Whitnell stepped onto the Durban Country Club to play in the 2025 Investec South African Open Championship. That’s when he managed the second round double ace on the 2nd and 12th holes. He also had a 3rd hole eagle to go down by 6 strokes. With 7 more birdies, 2 bogeys, and 1 double bogey, Whitnell ended the eventful day with a 9-under par 63. Interestingly, if he had had a faultless round, then he would have been the second golfer to score a 59 in the same week after Jake Knapp’s historic effort in the 2025 Cognizant Classic.
