Since his college days, Frankie Capan III has harbored a dream to play at the 3M Open, since TPC Twin Cities was less than 15 miles from where he grew up! He finally got to live that out last year. Unfortunately, it went far from what he would have liked. He tied for the 62nd position with a total score of 4-under 280. It simply was not his year; however, it looks like 2024 finally is, even though it may not be for his favorite event.

Coming off two back-to-back top-10 finishes on the Korn Ferry Tour, Capan had an exceptional opening round on Thursday at the Veritex Bank Championship at Texas Rangers Golf Club. Shooting 13-under 58, he tied for the second-lowest score in the Tour’s history. Carding an eagle on the ninth hole, Capan followed it with seven straight birdies in a row! And after saving par at the next two (despite finding a fairway bunker on the 18th), he ended his round bogey-free!

His massive 58 under even broke the course record of 59 that was set by World No. 1, Scottie Scheffler in 2020. Thrilled about it, the youngster proclaimed after, “When someone said it was for 58, I was excited because I know Scottie Scheffler shot 59, so whenever you can beat that guy, especially nowadays, I mean, you’ve got to take advantage.” And hey, that advantage now has the entire golf world shouting his name!

Frankie Capan III would not be a golf prodigy without his parents

Born on November 9, 1999, in the historic town of Stillwater along the St. Croix River in Minnesota, Frankie Capan III always has the greatest support from his mother, Charlynn Capan. Be it rooting for him at the 3M Open in 2023 or making him realize that he has achieved a record at the Korn Ferry Tour, his mother has always been spotted at all his matches.

As per the youngster, his mother understands him and his game better than anyone else in the world. “She’s kind of understood how I like to play the game more, what shots I like to hit at certain times,” he said. Interestingly, Charlynn is also his caddie! “Originally, she was supposed to be just a fill-in caddie, and the more success we had, the more we realized that she should just keep staying on the bag,” he said when revealing how his mom came to be on his bag.

But it wasn’t only his mom who had a role to play. It was Capan’s father who taught him that sometimes it was alright to not win. His dad believed that even losses taught you a lot, and Capan, who’s not seen every game turn in his favor, has certainly been applying this to his budding golf career. The 24-year-old turned pro in 2022 after graduating from Florida Gulf Coast University and is still looking for his first taste of victory!

Capan’s journey on the greens so far

Before turning pro, Frankie Capan III tried his luck on the PGA Tour for the first time at the 2016 Puerto Rico Open at Coco Beach, where he missed the cut after the second round, scoring 1-under 72. His first major appearance came in 2023, when he played at the US Open. Unfortunately, there too, he missed the cut after the second round.

The youngster has been playing on the Korn Ferry Tour since 2023 and has competed in 30 events there so far. This year alone, he’s played eight and has fared rather well, with two top-10 and two top-20 finishes. Unfortunately, he also missed the cut at three events: the Panama Championship, the 117 Visa Argentina Open, and the Astara Chile Classic.

Capan is also actively looking to find his way onto the PGA Tour to play in the big leagues. He even participated in the 2023 PGA Tour Q-School to try and make that dream a reality, but ended up with a T64. A win this week can perhaps change that, though. And seeing that he has a two-stroke lead with three rounds to go, it certainly is not far-fetched to imagine!
