Every athlete faces pressure while playing the sport. It’s how they respond to that stress and heat that defines them as sportsmen. While some may keep moving forward and work their way through the pressure, others choose to give in to it. There are also those who, under stress, make decisions they wouldn’t otherwise make. And that was exactly what a PGA Tour pro did recently on the course at the Players Championship, sending the golf fans in a frenzy!
A PGA Tour pro infuriates the golf world with his actions
5-time PGA Tour winner, Nick Watney, didn’t have the best start to the so-called “5th major” this week. Ending the first round four over par may not have even been the worst part of his day on Thursday this week. After all, at one hole, he carded a “quadruple bogey” thanks to a “boneheaded” mistake.

Dan Rapaport, Barstool Sports’ golf guy, recently posted a video of Watney at the 17th hole of the Players. “There is just not a single thing on planet earth that can reason with a pissed off golfer,” he wrote, venting his frustration with silly mistakes on the course. “They could be playing for $500 million and someone would still make an absolutely boneheaded mistake like this.”
The golfer’s brain is an amazing place. They could be playing for $500 million and someone would still make an absolutely boneheaded mistake like this. There is just not a single thing on planet earth that can reason with a pissed off golfer. https://t.co/OpoUsxQqpr

The golf world agreed with Rapaport too, and taking to the comments, they voiced their disappointment with Watney. They suggested that he had thrown in the towel too soon and given up too early.
He was like +6 before this hole anyways. Then went to 18 and put his drive in the water. Guy gave up long before this embarrassment.

And I do believe that was his 8th hole of the first round. Awfully early to be throwing in towel. He has real putting issues that have been plaguing him for some time. The frustration had been building.

Your buddy made double there too on his way to a 76. Oof!

I can imagine his head was burned out playing with Piercy and Hahn

Fans even recalled their own incidents of frustration on the course. They stated that they could only imagine how hard it was to play in that high-stress environment. And some fans even related to and empathized with his frustrations, claiming that they too had been in similar situations.
I'm a HS football coach and 'exploded' a headset in a moment's frustration and as it was hitting the ground realized 4-500 ppl saw that move. It's a brutal learning experience when that many ppl witness a costly life lesson. I can only imagine the pain Nick's in and feel for him

I threw a club at my own father in anger in HS. (Not to injure him, just towards his direction) Still beat myself up to this day about though. No joke

I’ve watched my son do that in junior events. Makes you want to bite a tree.
— Lee (@Lee35376258) March 9, 2023
The sports enthusiasts also chimed in, stating that a similar incident was quite common across all sports. They stated that the pressure and frustration often caused athletes to lose focus and even lead to anger.

The seepage of anger explodes. 🫣
