Rory is on a roll! It seems! 2025 started off on a great note for him. We all know this. 2 Tour wins before April. Then came April, and he got the chance to update his Instagram bio to “Grand Slam Champion.” What a year so far! This is what dreams are made of. Now, we’re sure he’s eyeing the second major, since it is to be held at Quail Hollow, the course that knows him as a 4x winner. With this, McIlroy has no plans to stop.

If reports are to be believed, Rory McIlroy and his camp are in talks with Golf Australia regarding his participation in the upcoming Australian Open. If the participation is confirmed, the tournament, which Rory thinks highly of, will see the Northern Irish golfer tee up for the first time since 2014.

“The Australian Open, for example, should almost be the fifth major. The market down there is huge with potential. They love golf. They love sports. They have been starved of top-level golf. And the courses are so good.” Rory McIlroy had stated regarding the prestigious event at the Royal Melbourne.

McIlroy had previously clinched the title at the event when he beat Adam Scott by a stroke in 2013. He did participate a year later to defend his title but couldn’t replicate his feat, with Jordan Spieth claiming the much-needed honors.

Aside from McIlroy, the likes of Min Woo Lee, who recently won the Texas Children’s Houston Open, and Cameron Smith and Adam Scott are slated to play in the tournament, which was founded in 1904. The Golf Australia representatives have maintained a tight lip regarding the participation of these famous golfers. They released a statement where they set the record straight. “Golf Australia continues to work through the future of the men’s and women’s Australian Opens, with nothing formal to confirm at this time. We look forward to working with our partners to confirm and announce the future of both events in the coming weeks.”

Golf in Australia is indeed a mad affair. Take LIV Golf Adelaide, for example. The event was spectacular, and it duly prompted the Saudi-backed tour to extend the contract till 2031.

The rich history of the Australian Open and the crazy fans down under

LIV Golf’s Adelaide event has been a huge success, and the numbers prove it. The first round alone saw a total TV reach of 882,000 viewers on Channel Seven in Australia, with an average audience of 170,000. These amazing numbers make clear one thing. LIV’s goal of expanding across the world is achieving success.

Scott O’Neil, the head of LIV Golf, confirmed that a long-term deal has been secured, keeping the tournament locked in through 2031. “We just announced today that we’ll be back through 2031. The premier and the state are making a great commitment, and the lord mayor has made a commitment. So we’re here, we’re happy, we’re in it for the long haul, and we are just getting started.”

This will be a huge driving point for the Australian Open, which boasts a rich history in itself. The men’s section of the event has featured several top professional golfers as champions, including the likes of Gary Player, who won it 7 times; Jack Nicklaus(6 titles); and Greg Norman(5 titles). The ardent viewers have been treated to great golfing since time immemorial. So the likes of McIlroy or Lee will not feel out of place in such an esteemed setting.
