Rory McIlroy‘s opinions about the PGA Tour-PIF merger are one roller coaster ride. At first, the Irish golfer was one of the biggest names opting to side solely with the Tour. Furthermore, he repeatedly dished out criticism to the breakaway league while serving as a player director.

But ever since he stepped down from that role, things haven’t been going his way. He earned the criticism of fans when he did a complete 180 and spoke in favor of the merger. McIlroy also got into a clash with Jordan Spieth when the latter openly criticized the merger talks. But how has this unfortunate chain of events affected the Irish golfer? A fellow PGA Tour player recently shed light upon it.

In a recent interview with Fore Play, Shane Lowry shed light upon what is happening among the PGA Tour pros. He spoke on this topic specifically, keeping his fellow Irish golfer in mind. Lowry believes ever since Rory McIlroy “changed his tune”, he has got into more clashes and gotten more upset with it.

“I’d say he’s probably a little bit annoyed that people have not kind of… people have turned their back on him,” Lowry said. He went on to state that the root cause of this annoyance was the Irish golfers’ difference of opinion with certain players. Lowry here was probably referring to the recent kerfuffle between Spieth and McIlroy.

Lowry, however, believes this period of clash between the Irish golfer and other PGA Tour pros will soon pass. But the views of other PGA Tour pros point in a different direction.

Before revealing McIlroy’s annoyance about the recent events, Lowry also sang praises for him. He shared the 34-year-old was one of the few people who were openly in favor of the PGA Tour when many others were moving to LIV Golf. Since then, however, McIlroy has softened his views about the breakaway league.

The same cannot be said about the other PGA Tour pros. First Jordan Spieth openly stated the SSG investment is all that the PGA Tour needs. He even claimed the PIF investment is not needed anymore. This was the start of a cold war between him and the Irish golfer. But Justin Thomas also feels the same way as Spieth.

When Thomas was asked about playing with the golfers from the PIF-funded circuit, he didn’t care to hide his dislike for the same. With multiple pros hesitant to fully accept LIV Golf and the PIF investment, Rory McIlroy has the daunting task of supporting the merger, unfortunately alone.
