Showcasing His Loyalty Towards Greg Norman, Longtime Caddie Once Said ‘No’ to a Huge Offer From Tiger Woods

The world has seen countless memorable performances by Tiger Woods in the past. And behind all his successful games, has been a remarkable caddie supporting the golfer. Looking at Woods’ career, it would certainly be a dream come true for anyone to hold the bag for him. However, there was one man who said no to the golfer when asked to caddie for him!

The caddie who allegedly rejected Tiger Woods

Golf legend Tiger Woods is highly responsible for bringing the sport to a level no one could have imagined. The 15x major winner has had a wonderful career during his prime years. His unbeatable records are still the biggest pedestal for numerous young professional golfers.

Woods has had several caddies during his professional career. Not to forget his longtime friend Steve Williams, who also wrote a book including his experiences with the player. However, there was another man who received the offer for working with the golfer even before Williams did.

After Tiger Woods ended his partnership with Mike “Fluff” Cowan in 1999, Woods needed a new man for the job. And his then-instructor, Butch Harmon, revealed his opinion about who Woods needed to hire“I told Tiger there were two guys he should hire – Tony Navarro and Steve Williams,” Harmon said. “I spoke with Tony first. But he said, ‘No, I’m still working for Greg (Norman).’”

Well, not very common for someone to deny working with Woods. But according to Harmon, it was one of Tony Navarro’s best qualities. “That’s the kind of guy Tony is. He’s incredibly loyal. Whoever he works for, he’s 100 percent invested in that person.” Harmon added.

Moreover, Navarro’s contribution to his player’s game was evidently essential. Although there are no official records, no other caddies have won so many professional tournaments with as many players as Navarro. He was so good at his job, that according to Harmon, several golfers wanted to work with him. “All these guys came to him. Caddies don’t solicit guys. The player picks the caddie. These guys all wanted Tony to work for them.”

However, working with Norman was also a great experience for the caddie. He shared how the ‘shark’ used to treat him and his family like his own. And he was always more like a friend to Norman than a caddie!
