McIlroy didn’t give up on the championship at any point. Make no mistake, he gave tough competition to Clark. However, Clark held his own and won his first major championship by defeating McIlroy by one shot. Clark’s superb two-putt par from 60 feet gave him the victory.

After the final round, McIlroy was questioned about what he was thinking when he was standing there waiting for the outcome to be official, and his reply was quite a confession. “You don’t want to wish bad on anyone, but you’re really hoping for a three-putt. You’re hoping to somehow get into a playoff to keep giving yourself a chance,” he said.

“You’re rooting for one guy, and that guy is yourself at that point. Yeah, I guess you’re just hoping for the other guy to slip up or make a mistake or give you a glimmer of hope,” the golfer added.

McIlroy is not a sore loser and commended Clark, saying that the American golfer had made excellent last-two putts and that he had been in good form all day.

McIlroy’s final-round story, two shots undid him

The Irishman discussed many things at the press conference, including his next adventure at the fourth major championship. He also discussed his final round. He said he was largely happy with his performance, except for his play on 8th and 14th holes. 

“That one wedge shot on 14, missed birdie putt on 8, really apart from that, I did everything else the way I wanted to. Yeah, fine, fine margins at this level and at this tournament especially, but I fought to the very end. I obviously never give up,” he said.
