With the support of loved ones, reaching great heights of success becomes easy and less stressful. Tiger Woods is a prominent example of this fact. He had his father, the late Earl Woods, supporting him throughout his career since his childhood. However, the same was the case for his rival, Greg Norman. He, unlike Woods, had his mother’s support, which eventually made him an outstanding golfer. In 2006, Norman published a book, “The Way of the Shark: Lessons on Golf, Business, and Life.” He was invited by TODAY to talk about it. During the interview, he narrated the story of his childhood. It proved that if it weren’t for his mother, we wouldn’t have become the ‘great white shark of golf.’

Greg Norman is thankful to his mother

Norman’s mother was his golf icon. She was the reason the retired golfer was interested in golf for the first time. But mere interest isn’t enough if one has no support. Thankfully, his mother was there beside him and provided him with the proper guidance that he needed. They used to play golf together for many years. The teenage Norman once expressed his wish and made a crucial promise to his mother, “I told her that I wanted to one day win the British Open, because that’s where golf was born.

The LIV Golf chief was already learning a lot from his mother. She taught him about the history and tricks of golf. Even though he was not a good golfer then, his mother wholeheartedly supported his dreams. Norman continued the story further and said, “Never once did my mother tell me I couldn’t do it.” Instead of demoralizing him, she pushed him in the right direction. “She told me I’d have to work exceptionally hard to achieve that particular dream.

Norman used to joke about sending the British Open trophy to his mother. Because she was the reason the two-time major championship winner became a golfer. Therefore, he would say to his mother, “That’ll be your reward for getting me started in golf.” The pro’s journey in golf started when he first caddied for his mother and played a quick nine holes with her.

When did Norman fulfill his dream of winning the Open Championship?

Norman was confident and adamant and wanted to fulfill his dream. His mother provided him with guidance and support. As a result, he went on to win the British Open Championship twice.

1986 and 1993 became the essential years of his successful career as a golfer; his first major win coming in 1986. Despite the unfavorable weather at Turnberry that day, the pro golfer shot 63 in the second round. He was tied for the lowest-ever round at the Open. Only 15 players were able to break par in the second round. However, ‘the great white shark’ shot 69 in the final round and won the Open Championship by five shots.
