THE PLAYERS Championship has earned the moniker of the unofficial fifth major because of its legacy and rich history of boasting the best of the best in the golf world on TPC Sawgrass. From March 12th–17th, the event will be celebrating its 50th year in the golf world.

However, it looks like, amidst all the grand preparation, the tagline used for the tournament did not sit well with many in the golfing community. This year, the field includes players like Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, and many more. Many still believe that the event has become a shadow of its glorious past.

Golf writer Dan Rapaport recently took to his X (now Twitter) account and shared a tweet where he sarcastically mocked THE PLAYERS Championship for carrying forward their prestigious tagline, which according to him is no longer credible. He wrote, “Bold move from the Players Championship to stick with “the best field in golf” tagline in March 2024.”

The tournament was also not included in the PGA Tour’s list of 2024 Signature Events, as previously it was a part of the 2023 Tour Designated Events. On top of that, Tiger Woods will also be absent from Ponte Vedra Beach. However, the prize money undeniably makes the championship attractive, despite all of this. The tournament has a purse of $25 million, and the winner takes away the prize money of a whopping $4.5 million.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary with a Milatry Appreciation concert the tournament held on the Floridian greens is only going to be grander this year. Thus, all the wishes are in line. However, it turns out that the golf community does not give in to the tagline that they have been using, and they get heavy criticism for this.

The golf community gives LIV Golfers a shoutout!

The internet community chose to share their thoughts on the tagline used by THE PLAYERS Championship and also added the PIF-funded league into the mix. Even though the LIV Golfers have been struggling to make their way to the credibility of the OWGR points and Greg Norman withdrawing his application for them after getting repeatedly rejected, it looks like the league has indeed established a loyal fanbase.

It looks like one PGA Tour fan disagrees with Rapaport’s tweet and believes the tournament has the best field in golf and commented, “It still is. You have 2 leagues, and LIV is very top heavy with 0’s at the bottom. The PGA still has the deeper roster”

One of the followers even brutally dissed them, accusing them of not spending enough and making it a scripted game by buying off the pros.

A golf fan showed his sheer disappointment in the upcoming tournaments at the PGA Tour, and the others that the golf world is to host. He said, “Another boring ass tournament this week. Terrible. When can we just get all the best players playing together. Just fan torture”.

A golf fan even took the liberty to list down the list of golfers and their current format and shared their stance on the 5 golfers who, according to them, can actually compete.

After examining the fields of the TPC, it was found that the quality of the field is indeed higher than most of the majors. This is for the bottom 25% of the field, and the stringent selection criteria. But do you think that makes it the strongest field in the entire golf world?
