2023 DP World Tour Championship: Power Rankings, Defending Champion, Prize Money, and Major Details

This week the DP World Tour is hosting the DP World Tour Championship. Played since 2009 this is one of the selected tournaments of the league being hosted in the United Arab Emirates. Back for its 15th edition, the event sees a league of top names competing for the mind-blowing $10 million prize purse. Last year’s winner is Jon Rahm who left behind all to win the first prize of $3 million out of the $10 million prize purse.

He will be stepping on the ground as the defending champion next week. The championship is played by the top 50 players in the DP World Tour Rankings at the beginning of the event. The tournament is always played at the Jumeirah Golf Estates, Earth course in Dubai, UAE, which is designed by LIV Golf CEO, Greg Norman. Let’s take a look at who will be competing next weekend.

Top contenders for the 2023 DP World Tour Championship

Like other tournaments, the DPWT Championship also follows the standard stroke play format, where 72 holes are played over the course of 4 rounds. The huge purse of $10 million has attracted big names for the event and the winner takes home $3 million. The prize money of a $1 million bonus is also given to the winner of the Race to Dubai. Here is the power ranking for it.

Rory McIlroy – The top name on the list is Rory McIlroy. Ruling the charts on the DP World Tour Rankings, McIlroy is already a fan favorite. And in a sense, he too would be a defending champion, as he won the tournament twice back in 2012 and 2015 and went home with a paycheck of $1.3 million both times. This year has won the Genesis Scottish Open and Hero Dubai Desert Classic so far and surely will try his best to acquire another.

Jon Rahm – Following McIlroy closely is Jon Rahm who is number 2 on European ranking. This year with three wins to his name, one of which was a major, will surely give a tough competition to others on the ground. He has also recently pulled out of Woods’s new league TGL. His Race to Dubai points are 3081.94.

Viktor Hovland – Sitting at number 14 on the ranking, the young prodigy Viktor Hovland has already impressed the world by winning the Memorial Tournament, BMW Championship, and Tour Championship this year. His recent Ryder Cup heroics further add to his impressive portfolio and has 1884.48 Race to Dubai points. Hovland too would be eyeing the first prize.

Matt Fitzpatrick – Similar to McIlroy, Fitzpatrick also is a two-time champion at the DP World Tour Championship. Having won the event in 2016 and 2020, he is among one of the strongest names on the field next weekend. Moreover, he won the Alfred Dunhill Championship last month, which must have boosted his morale. He is number 19 in the rankings and has 1,629.08 Race to Dubai points.

Tommy Fleetwood – Currently, Tommy Fleetwood is busy defending his two-time consecutive title at the Nedbank Championship this weekend. After that next week he will head for the season-ending tournament on the European Tour. He is the fifth contestant in the power ranking. Currently, on the 29 DP World ranking, he is searching for another big win.

Jumeirah Golf Estates: one of the top golf courses in UAE

The Jumeirah Golf Estates are expanded across 1,119 hectares of green landscape and is among the most beautiful course in the nation. It features two 18-hole courses which are designed by Greg Norman and has different environmentally themed names, Fire and Earth. The Earth Course always hosted the event.
