Experiencing a win in a competition is a very special moment. It is especially true if the victory came from an event such as the Ryder Cup. And for Xander Schauffele, the taste of victory in the 2021 edition of the biennial tournament turned out to be in the form of smoke.

As the American is currently duking it out on the course, one can’t help but recount the iconic moment from Whistling Straits. The American team was able to dominate the European squad during the 2021 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits with a whopping 19-9 win margin. Although Schauffele was not able to win his Sunday singles against Rory McIlroy, he was nevertheless a huge part of the victory by winning three of the team matches over the past two days with his partners.

But what the world witnessed after the epic win was the 29-year-old celebrating his triumph with a cigar while emulating the senior pro and the ‘Bad Boy’ of golf, John Daly, known for his smoking habits. What’s more, the 7X PGA Tour winner did not come to the course packing a smoke but received one from his fans along with a beer can after his match with the Northern Irishman.

The 2022 Genesis Scottish Open winner went ahead and drank one too many beers causing him to smoke a bit of nicotine to level himself out. Although he didn’t know what kind of cigar it was, what remains, in the end, would be the iconic moment etched into the history of the record Ryder Cup win, which saw the most points scored by a team since 1975.

Well, one might think that the instance is sort of an everyday occurrence for the golfer. But the truth is far from it. His success on the course proves otherwise. But even so, one might be curious as to how the professional was introduced into the same: enter his father, Stefan Schauffele.

The 2021 Olympic gold medalist is by no means a rookie when it comes to cigars. Moreover, he has named Montecristo No. 2 as his preferred choice. Recounting how he was introduced to it, Schauffele mentions how he used to smoke with his father when he was younger. “He taught me how to handle them, storing them correctly,” reminisced the golfer before continuing, “My dad would let me take a few puffs here and there. Dip it in Cognac. Taught me as many things as you can teach a kid about a cigar.”

Reasoning his choice of celebration after the Ryder Cup victory, the 29-year-old pointed out how he didn’t celebrate anything else while referring to his win at the Tokyo Olympics, three T2 finishes on the PGA Tour, and a T3 in the 2021 Masters. Thus, when it came to the sweet and historic win, he couldn’t hold himself back, resulting in an “all hang loose situation” combining his two victories in the year.
