Phil Mickelson may currently be a part of LIV Golf, but his three decades on the PGA Tour can never be forgotten. The left-handed golfer has won 6 Majors and 45 PGA Tour wins during his tenure at the Tour. But one moment from the PGA Tour will always be remembered by Mickelson that brought the golfer to tears.
During the year 2009, the Mickelson family suffered heartbreaking news after it was revealed that Mickelson’s wife Amy was diagnosed with breast cancer. The 6-time Major champion was ranked 2 at the time which is his highest position in World Golf rankings.

PGA Tour shows its solidarity with Phil Mickelson and his family
Mickelson and his wife Amy were watching the third round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. Lefty who had won the tournament a year earlier decided to opt-out of that year’s tournament to stay beside his cancer-diagnosed wife.
The couple was surprised by the people who donned pink to raise awareness for breast cancer research. The news of Amy’s cancer only came a week before the event, yet the PGA Tour was ready to show support in such a short period of time.

Later Amy Mickelson released a statement on her reaction to the outpouring of support from fans. She said, “Everytime we see a player, caddy, announcer, or fan wearing pink we are overwhelmed by the love and support we feel.”
Amy further added, “The 11 days since we received the diagnosis have been very difficult, but this incredible gesture helps us feel so much stronger. We are determined to overcome this. Today’s ‘Pink Out’ will help all people, whether they’re fighting breast cancer or helping a loved one, know that they are not alone.”
It was a lovely gesture on behalf of the PGA Tour to stand with Phil and his family. It is important to realize that, unlike other sports where players play for a league or tournament, players playing for PGA Tour are considered members instead of players. And members must be dealt with as a family.
Mickelson’s statement on the PGA Tour’s stand of support
Phil met his wife back in 1992 and married her four years later. So it was quite obvious that Mickelson had a hard time after finding out that the love of his life had been diagnosed with cancer.
Along with Amy’s statement which was released on Mickelson’s website a week later, Lefty too released a statement. He mentioned how he and his wife “had tears rolling down our faces” when they heard about the “Pink Out” celebration.

The then 39-year-old said, “That is such an incredibly thoughtful gesture, not only for Amy, but for the 200,000 women who are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. I know it will mean a lot to them, too.” He also mentioned how his top priority at the moment was the health of his caring wife.
Phil stood loyal to his words. He decided to give up his professional golf career to support his wife. And thanks to his support, Amy defeated breast cancer after battling it for 11 months.
Now, Amy can be seen in several Majors and events supporting her loving husband. With Phil participating in the 150th Open Championship, where do you think the LIV Golf player will finish?
