An expert in the game of golf, Rory McIlroy has been dubbed as one of the best players of the era by many in the golf community. With a huge number of victories under his belt, 24 PGA Tour wins including the four majors, the Northern Irishman is the crème de la crème of the sport. But none of it would have been possible without the extensive support of his family.

Although the Ryder Cup veteran has always preferred to keep a lid on his personal life, not much escapes the spotlight these days, especially for a star of the game like McIlroy. Let us now take a close look at the golfer’s family which has helped him achieve the success he has today.

Meet Rory McIlroy’s supportive family

‘Rors’ grew up as an only child to Gerry and Rosaleen “Rosie” McIlroy in Hollywood, County Down. Born on May 4, 1989, he shared a very close relationship with his parents who made great sacrifices in order for the PGA Tour Pro to pursue his passion for the sport.

The golfer’s parents tied the knot in the month of January in 1988 after which they gave birth to their son a year later. The Dad-Mom duo made sure to provide a happy living space to the young McIlroy in Northern Ireland, who completed his primary school at St. Patrick’s, a Catholic institution, after which he attended Sullivan Upper School for his further studies.

His mother, Rosie, worked the night shift at the 3M factory before which she would prepare the dinner for her son and husband. Meanwhile, the McIlroy’s father worked in various bars as a bartender. The 4X major winner’s dad worked from noon to midnight where he spent the first six hours as a bartender at the Hollywood Golf Club, after which he would work at a sports club for the rest of the hours in the evening.

His father, a scratch golfer, had once said in an interview with Belfast Live“I am a working-class man and that’s all I knew – to get the money we needed for Rory to be able to learn and compete at golf.” Moreover, the parents made sure that their young son could participate in various amateur tournaments, all the while playing their part in shaping him to be the professional he is today.

Although McIlroy only realized later in his life the kind of sacrifices that his parents had made, he has mentioned how they would never have to work another day, while expressing his gratitude and adoration for them. Well, their love is what pushed ‘Rors’ to become the man he is today. The golfer also has massive support in his beautiful wife and daughter.

Meet McIlroy’s wife and little daughter

The 34-year-old met the love of his life during the 2012 Ryder Cup when he missed his tee time having overslept. Then came Erica Stoll to the rescue as she, a PGA employee back then, contacted the golfer to make the necessary arrangements in order for him to reach the course. The encounter turned out to be nothing short of a fated one as they got along well following which the couple got engaged in 2015.

The duo got married at Ashworth Castle in Ireland on April 22, 2017, which involved a grand ceremony that many stars attended, including Ed Sheeran and Stevie Wonders. They welcomed their first daughter, Poppy Kennedy McIlroy, in 2020 after which the family has been living happily in Florida. There have been many instances when the couple and their daughter were spotted on the course having fun, like the par-3 contest where the mom-daughter twosome caddied for the golfer.

The support that McIlroy has received from his family has been crucial in his rise as a golfer. One can’t help but be in awe of the love and respect they have for each other.
