The LIV Golf offers the biggest purses in the history of golf for each tournament. On top of that, the organization has paid its players appearance fees as a contract deal. While money is not an issue for the LIV golfers, not having the OWGR points is. And the 2020 U.S. Open champion, Bryson DeChambeau, has a solution for it while taking an indirect dig at the PGA Tour!

“You have the Hero World Challenge, and they have ranking points there,” DeChambeau said during the LIV Golf press meet. “Why can’t we have the same, too,” he suggested.

The Hero World Challenge is an unofficial PGA Tour tournament that Tiger Woods hosts. The event doesn’t offer the FedEx Cup points to its champion. However, even being a limited-field event, the Challenge offers Official World Golf Ranking points to its champion with the prize money.

Did Tiger Woods Really Turn Down a $1 Billion Offer From LIV Golf?

Notably, the LIV Golf has applied to get the OWGR approval; however, since it is a 54-hole event with limited players, the OWGR officials might reject the league’s application. And DeChambeau took a dig at the Tour by commenting on the officials granting the points for Woods’ Hero World Challenge winner, although it’s an unofficial and limited player event.

Has Bryson DeChambeau ever won the Challenge hosted by Tiger Woods

The Hero World Challenge is a 72-hole invitational tournament that benefits the TGR Foundation. The field of the event often includes all the 4 major winners, the defending champion, 11 top players on the OWGR standings, and 2 sponsor exemptions. Notably, the event host, Woods, also takes part in the event, even if he doesn’t come under any of the above categories.

DeChambeau has been in the top order of the OWGR standings and has won the 2020 U.S. Open. Hence, he has competed in the Challenge a couple of times. However, he has never won the title.

How do the OWGR standings affect the LIV Golf players?

The OWGR points are one of the primary determinants for the players to get eligibility in a major tournament. The past major champions, including Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, and DeChambeau, are eligible to play in the majors without the OWGR points, at least for a couple of years.

However, such is not the case for most players on the field. They need the points to get major eligibility, making it important for the LIV golf players.
