It is very common for fans to hate a single player.

Patrick Reed has been a victim of constant hate from most golf fans regularly. The constant cheating allegations have stuck with him throughout his professional career. Throwback to the 2019 Presidents Cup, when Reed’s caddie decided to fight back against one such heckler in Melbourne, Australia, and ended up facing the consequences.

When it comes to competing at the International team event representing his country, Patrick Reed has been considered a hero and also labeled as “Captain America” for his notable performance against Rory McIlroy in the 2016 Ryder Cup. However, three years later in the Presidents Cup, the American Team was facing a hostile Australian crowd, who did not spare any opposition golfer, especially Reed.

Moreover, it only had been a week since the infamous Hero World Challenge incident that saw him improve his line of play. The Australian fans heckled “Cheat” and nicknamed him The Sandman, until his caddie, Kessler Karain decided to fight back.

Reed’s caddie hits a hater

Patrick Reed failed to register a single point in the opening three days of the event. The pressure reached its boiling point during the second round of Fourballs on Saturday when Karain decided he’s heard enough.

“We have been known for having fun with some good banter, but after hearing several fans in Australia for three days some had taken it too far. I had had enough. And this gentlemen was one of them”, said Reed’s caddie. He further added, “Riding on the cart, guy was about three feet from Patrick and said: ‘You f***ing s*ck’.”

Kessler Karain, apart from his duties as Patrick Reed’s caddie, also happens to be his brother-in-law. He then decided to jump off the cart and shoved the hater, until being stopped by the security guard. Karain got back on the cart and decided to drive away.

Karain defended himself by claiming every caddie in the Tour could relate to him. He said, “I don’t think there’s one caddie I know that could blame me. Unless his bones break like Mr Glass, the most harm done was a little spilled beer which I’m more than happy to reimburse him for”.

Spectators around the incident revealed to have seen punches being thrown. With physicality involved, it was quite apparent Kessler Karain would face punishment.

Patrick Reed understands his caddie’s suspension

Following the incident, the PGA Tour released a statement, announcing Karain’s suspension for the final day of the Presidents Cup. Reed accepted the ban, as he chose his coach, Josh Gregory, as a stand-in caddie.

“I respect the TOUR’s decision. We are all focused on winning the Presidents Cup”, said Patrick Reed. He later went on to win his match against Pan Cheng-tsun and thus lifting the 2019 Presidents Cup for Team USA.
