The Qualifying session in Monaco saw some strange incidents and an even unusual pole sitter. Kimi Raikkonen took his first pole position since 2008 beating his team mate Sebastian Vettel and third place Valtteri Bottas. Others in the top ten included: Max Verstappen, Daniel Ricciardo, Carlos Sainz, Sergio Perez, Romain Grosjean, Jenson Button and Stoffel Vandoorne.

Lewis Hamilton was out in Q2 after qualifying 14th having struggled for speed all through Q1 and Q2. He was on a quick lap but with Vandoorne crashing at the end of Q2, he had to abort his lap and settle for 14th place.

The other big story was McLaren managing both their cars to Q3 in what was a brilliant return from the Brit Jenson Button who finished 9th.
