Why Is American-Born Lars Nootbaar Playing Alongside Shohei Ohtani for Japan in the 2023 World Baseball Classic?

To strike a great friendship, understanding, and mutual respect are required. It seems to be the case between Nootbaar and Ohtani, and the latest event is another example of that.

Lars Nootbaar and Shohei Ohtani are perfect competitors and partners!

Nootbear considers Ohtani a great friend, but with the MLB season in the run, both will look to better each other in the competition. With Ohtani already in the lead with a better average and runs scored, Nootbaar will look not to let the player go out of reach. Both know each other well and are aware of what it takes to be the champion.

Even though Nootbaar is American, his mother is of Japanese lineage. It made him eligible to play for Japan and become the first one non- Japan born player to make any stride for the Japanese national baseball team.

In a conversation with The Japan Times, Nootbaar had shared, “It’s been unbelievable. I’m surrounded by a bunch of talent, a lot of guys that will probably eventually be in the big leagues and have a lot of big-league success. So just being part of the team has been a lot of fun, enjoying the ride with these guys. Great teammates, great coaches, everything.”

In the recently concluded 2023 World Baseball Classic, Nootbaar and Ohtani played together for Japan. Given that lot is there to be played for in MLB, the world will see them having more banter.
