Superstar couple Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez attracted the attention of the masses when they started dating. It didn’t matter if they publicized their relationship, the couple’s individual celebrity status was enough for the paparazzi. And even now, a few years after they’ve broken up, A-Rod and JLo are two of the most-talked-about individuals in America.
The ex-partners did a number of things together that made headlines, but there was one thing that deserved applause more than others. Natural disasters have become commonplace enough that not everyone pays close attention to them. But the affected areas and families often don’t have enough helping hands to take care of the situation. When Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, Rodriguez and Lopez took the time to personally visit the affected families. Both are descended from Puerto Rican parents, so it was especially important for them to put in the effort.

Rodriguez once shared with PEOPLE what it was like to see Lopez, whose own family was affected, react to the news. “I would wake up… she would be crying looking at social media. I mean one thing is to raise money. The other thing is to actually fly down here, feel the warmth of the people, see the beauty of this island.” J-Lo had to wait six days to hear from her family, and it must have been an incredibly hard time.

Hurricane Maria hit in late September-early October 2017 and caused extensive damage to thousands of buildings. In the aftermath, many people lost their homes and lived without electricity for weeks at a time. Three months after the hurricane, JLo and A-Rod personally went to the Caribbean island to help in whatever way they could.
But not only that, the couple wore black in support of the Time’s Up movement that was taking over the news feeds at the time. Many celebrities wore black at the Golden Globes to show solidarity for the “Me Too” movement as well. JLo even organized a concert with A-list celebrities to help raise funds for Puerto Rico.
