The New York Mets are in a rich vein of form. With an NL East topping record and 37 wins in 56 played games so far, they sit clear from the rest of their divisional competition. And while the team may touch new heights in their play, the commentary team is not to be left far behind either. As the Mets took on divisional competition in the San Diego Padres, the commentary team had what can only be called some fun while in the box.

At the bottom of the 6th, with the Padres trailing the Mets 5-1, the commentary team, one can say, did a minor slip-up. Gary Cohen, while narrating a base hit by Jeff McNeil, termed the hit a “baseball stroke”. While the comment may have shown otherwise, the commentary team had a gala time as they picked apart the remark and had a good laugh around it.

Commentators slip up with “stroking out” fiasco

It all started with an innocuous comment made by one of the commentary team. “Here we are again, the Mets stroking out,” Keith Hernandez said. But what was intended to be a conclusion could well have started something that none on the commentary team expected.

Gary Cohen was quick to spot the slip-up and immediately bought it to everyone’s attention. “Did you say stroking out?” Cohen asked. Seemingly oblivious to how inappropriate it could be on national air, the commentator seemed to stick his guns.” Stroking out. Yes, it’s a baseball stroke,” Hernandez added.

The two riffed for a bit on how because of their age. Said Hernandez, “Am I a creepy old man?”

However, the conversation soon turned self-aware. One commentator pointed out clearly the potential implications of what he said and what it could mean. “From a medical standpoint, do you know what stroking out means?” he asked.

It was only then that it dawned upon the commentator that it could have been a slip-up. After a thorough laugh at their own expense, the two came up with golden tenets around commentary in this day and age. They concluded“You don’t wanna say bleeding out and you don’t wanna say stroking out.”

The NL East – A Close race between New York Mets and other contenders

The New York Mets’ visit to Petco Park will probably be counted among one of their successes. With a 7-5 lead at the top of the 9th, many will expect the Mets to close out the game, save for any late innings heroics from the Padres.

And while the Mets’ commentary is by far the most entertaining combination out there, the on-field performance of all three contenders is following closely. Although the New York Mets have an iron grip on the top spot, the NL East is shaping up nicely. With the LA Dodgers, only one game behind the Mets, and Padres maintaining pace and only three games behind. The top spot at this point is a bit of a toss-up.
