It won’t be a stretch to claim that Hendrick Motorsports is in an ambiguous state if the Cup Series results are taken into consideration. While its speedster Kyle Larson and the rising star are riding the high horse of victories and delivering remarkable results, its poster boy Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman are still struggling to find traction on the tracks of NASCAR. There are just six races left before judgment day is here.

However, the question that arises at this point is, with frequent victories coming in, how long before the victor gets dogged by bad luck? Not long, apparently. Things seem to go awry, even after delivering an impressive result, especially a podium finish. And the recent occurrence has reinforced the fact, as the Hendrick Motorsports driver faced the brunt of it.

Hendrick Motorsports star driver forced to put down his crown post-race

Before delving deeper, let’s rewind back to one of the infamous incidents that occurred last year in the tracks of Pocono. It was the Joe Gibbs Racing drivers, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch, who had seized the top two positions. Hamlin took the chequered while Busch finished second. However, the happiness was short-lived, as both drivers were charged with a penalty and were disqualified. Apparently, the Toyotas failed to pass the post-race inspection. This forced them to relinquish their position to Chase Elliott who claimed his fourth season victory.

A similar incident has come back to haunt, not JGR, but HMS. In Friday’s Southern Super Series race at 5 Flags Speedway, the incident occurred after the commencement of PepperJack Kennels Twin 100, as the rising star of the winningest team, William Byron was forced to put down his crown.

The HMS driver, who was driving the Anthony Campi-owned #24 Chevrolet, had taken the lead with 39 laps after engaging in a fierce battle with Jeremy Doss but was eventually able to outlast him. Byron was also able to maintain the lead even after restarting the race, issued after Michael Goddard brought out a caution only to secure another victory to his name in the ASA Series.

Post-winning, Byron expressed to Racing America, “It was a hard-fought win. I’ve never won here. It’s one of my weaker tracks.”

However, the victory was short-lived for Byron, as he had to relinquish his crown after being deemed disqualified from the event post-race inspection. The driver’s car failed the technical inspection that had taken place after the commencement of the ASA Southern Series. Following this, Jeremy Doss was announced as the new victor of the event. However, the end of the debacle birthed an ensuring debate, post the inspection reveal by a veteran journalist of the sport.

The news was also made public by the veteran NASCAR journalist Matt Weaver, on his Twitter account. Weaver wrote, “William Byron and the Anthony Campi Racing No. 24 has been disqualified from the Southern Super Series win at Five Flags Speedway. Unapproved panning. Jeremy Doss and Bob Lyon Motorsports wins the Kioti 100.”

Following the publication of the news, the fans of NASCAR and netizens seem to question the nature of the penalty and whether it was justified or not. Many wrote, “I guess floor pan but why is thus stuff not found on pre race I don’t get this.”
