Sam Mayer had the last laugh at Watkins Glen. But it did not come clean. Just as the cars entered turn 1, the number 1 car closed into the inside of Ty Gibbs and sent his number 19 Toyota spinning off the track. Mayer then proceeded to snatch the lead from Sheldon Creed right before the final lap and led the rest of the race. Thanks to the chaotic overtime.

Ty Gibbs did not hold back on lashing out at his rival. He rebuked the 20-year-old Wisconsin native saying that he had 12 wins in the Xfinity Series, whereas Sam Mayer has just earned his second one at Watkins Glen. In an interview with NBC Sports, the grandson of Joe Gibbs called out Sam Mayer, saying, “I’m racing on Sundays. He (Mayer) has more starts and I have more wins“.

However, in a post-race interview, Sam Mayer referred to the incident and said that it was an accident and definitely not intentional. He said, “I feel bad for doing that obviously. You don’t wanna take out a race car like that…just trying to get another win in the Xfinity Series.”

“I got a lot of catching up to do. I mean, I put my nose in there and that’s a part of it. Fenders are fenders,” he added.

Needless to say, the fans will be the judge of the villain in this Mayer-Gibbs controversy. But what the fans did to Ty Gibbs on Twitter is perhaps not very sweet for the #54 Toyota driver in the Cup Series.

Moments after NASCAR on NBC posted the tweet, mean comments started pouring in and almost all of them condemned Ty Gibbs for having wrecked countless cars for getting the win earlier. Some of them also pointed out how he has been getting special facilities being the grandson of a Cup Series team owner.

A fan said scornfully, “He should have said, “I only have 12 wins even though I’m given the best equipment in the garage thanks to my grandpa.”

Someone said, “Because your Grand Daddy owns a Cup Team.”

While another one said, “He’s a spoiled rich kid and a sore loser!”

Hearing the comments of Ty Gibbs regarding Sam Mayer, someone called the former the “2023 Nominee for Least Popular Driver.”

One of the haters took it as far as calling Gibbs unfit for racing in the Cup Series and said, “Ty Gibbs doesn’t belong in the Cup series!”
