In the NASCAR world, being a crew chief is not a very straightforward job. A crew chief dawns many hats as the NASCAR season goes on. So, there are many things a crew chief needs to accomplish to help his team climb the leaderboard. A leader, a strategist, a problem-solver, a statistician, a mechanic, and a mentor. These are but a few roles that a crew chief has to take on for his driver. And so, it’s the team’s responsibility to make sure that they share a healthy relationship. And we recently got a glimpse of the same when Hendrick Motorsports shared a YouTube short of Kyle Larson and his crew chief Cliff Daniels having an interesting conversation about superheroes.

Chase Elliott had asked the two about their favorite superheroes. Cliff Daniels, having very little interest in comics or superheroes, told an intriguing story to answer the question.

Cliff’s story behind choosing Batman as his favorite superhero was an interesting one.

“So, 2010, I was going to get a puppy dog. I went to the animal shelter in downtown Kannapolis. Which happened to be right next to the Dale Earnhardt Statue,” said Cliff. “And of the litter of dogs that we were looking at, there was one left, it was a black Lab [Labrador] named Batman.”

“I still have him today, Batman is about to turn 13 years old. I’ve never been into like comics or Superheroes all that much. But because my dog’s name is Batman, It’s Batman.”

“I feel like he’s done a great job of leading in a lot of the same ways he did last year,” said Larson in an interview with NASCAR. “Even though last year I was leading, he was trying to keep everybody humble and staying motivated through the success. I feel like it’s been a lot of the same thing. Where he’s had to lead in a way of keeping you motivated through the difficult races or the up-and-down season on pit road or whatever.”
