.After a legendary 19-year career in the Cup Series, Dale Earnhardt Jr. hung up his fireproof suit and swapped his racing gloves for a commentator’s microphone in 2017, working as an analyst for NASCAR on NBC. Fans had grown accustomed to seeing him in the broadcast booth rather than on the track, and the transition was bittersweet.

However, the excitement reached a fever pitch when Earnhardt Jr. quietly slipped back into his fireproofs, sans any official announcement, and took the wheel of a late-model car. While he had made occasional appearances in the Xfinity Series and dabbled in late-model racing last year, this unannounced return to late-model racing took everyone by surprise.
