Richard Childress Racing’s #8 driver Kyle Busch will race alongside another champion driver in the World Racing League finale. Joining Busch from the other side of the world will be 2023 Supercars champion Brodie Kostecki. 

The Australian driver’s team Erebus Motorsports is strengthening its ties with Richard Childress after Kostecki’s Cup Series debut this year. In a piece of exciting news, Childress hinted this partnership could lead to a Supercars entry for Busch in 2024. 

Kyle Busch invited by South Australian Premier for the Adelaide 500 next season

The Australian equivalent of NASCAR, the Supercars championship, ordinarily does not field one-off entrants, especially in its season finale. However, racing star Kyle Busch might soon open those exceptional doors for him after the Cup season ends in Phoenix next year. Team owner Richard Childress graced the Adelaide 500 last week which saw Brodie Kostecki clinch the season’s title. In an interview with v8sleuth.com.au, Childress said, “We’ve talked to him [Busch] some about coming.” 

After Kostecki’s Cup race in Indianapolis this year and the upcoming 8-hour race at the Circuit of The Americas, perhaps it was time for the RCR driver to make the international leap as well. His team owner was certain Busch would enjoy the challenge. Childress confirmed, “The track’s good, tight, the kind of racing he’d like. I think that he’d do good over here.” Busch’s engineer Andrew Dickeson facilitated this tie-up between RCR and Erebus. Dickeson further revealed his conversation with Erebus CEO Barry Ryan after a preliminary discussion with Busch.

“Barry asked me about that, it works in with our schedule and the event organizers would love it. It’s not a wildcard event, but I believe they (Supercars) would make an exception.” The South Australian Premier would himself wish to see the enormous talent of Kyle Busch explored in the Adelaide 500. Australian expat Dickeson recalled, “We were at the State dinner the other night and the Premier came up and said he wanted him [Childress] to bring Kyle back next year.”

Despite their enthusiasm, the RCR engineer was cautious of Busch immediately finding success on foreign ground.

In the inaugural Chicago Street Race this year, Shane Van Gisbergen created history. A former Supercars champion himself, the New Zealand driver won the race in his Cup Series debut. But Richard Childress Racing engineer Andrew Dickeson did not believe Kyle Busch could recreate that extraordinary feat.

The last time the #8 driver won at a Road Course was in Sonoma in 2015. Although he has three Top 5 finishes on road courses this year, his average finish on those tracks in the past three years has been 15. And that is what Dickeson expects from his driver. “I think it’d be hard,” the engineer confessed. “He [Busch] wouldn’t come in and do what Shane did at Chicago. If he could run mid-pack, I think that’s a win.”
