For the entirety of the 2023-24 season, the possibility of LeBron James leaving Lakers has dominated the headlines. Despite the excessive coverage, few know what King James has on his mind. Moreover, Bron has provided little to no hints about his future.

However, NBA insider and ESPN analyst Brian Windhorst has finally provided some clarity over LeBron’s contract situation with the Lakers.

During a recent appearance on ESPN’s Get Up, Windhorst disclosed LeBron’s future plans, and it’s not good news for the franchise fandom.

“LeBron can opt out of his contract this summer, which I think he will do for two reasons,” the analyst said. “One, he can get a multi-year contract that averages $50+ million a year. And this is important, he doesn’t have a no-trade clause now. If he opts out of his contract and signs a new one, he can install a no-trade clause. So, I expect regardless of Bronny, regardless of Lakers’ finish, it’s probable that he’ll opt out of that contract. Even if it’s just to resign with the Lakers.”

While some fans may be skeptical of these reports, it’s important to note that Brian Windhorst is an extremely credible source. The 46-year-old journalist has been covering LeBron since his high school days. Back then, Windhorst worked at the Akron Beacon Journal and had to convince his editor to allow him to cover LeBron’s games. With Windhorst giving his verdict on LeBron’s future, the Lakers would aim to get their act together and finish the season on a high in order to persuade LeBron to remain in LA.

Are the Lakers still title contenders?

The Los Angeles Lakers have had an underwhelming season so far. Fans of the Lakers held lofty ambitions of an NBA title before the start of the season. However, they have disappointed not only their fans but more importantly, themselves, with below-par performances. The Lakers’ leadership also bears responsibility, as their management of the roster could be deemed chaotic.

The Lakers currently languish in the 9th spot of the Western Conference standings, with 31 wins from 59 games. However, their recent performances have provided the Lakers fanbases some hope. Hope that the Lakers could turn on a switch and emerge as a completely different beast in the postseason. With the likes of LeBron and Anthony Davis on their roster, there’s a high probability that the Lakers would be a formidable foe in the playoffs.
