The Los Angeles Lakers made one of the most unexpected Western Conference Finals runs in the 2022-23 NBA season. Starting the regular season with a 2-10 record, the Lakers shocked the world with their Western Conference Finals run. However, this may not have happened without some major front office moves to acquire support for their superstar duo of LeBron James and Anthony Davis. After the All-Star break in 2023, the Lakers were a different team. With an upgraded roster, the Lakers went from play-in tournament contenders to championship favorites.

Now, the 17-time NBA champions look to sustain their success and attempt to bag a record 18th title. With this in mind, the Lakers have been highly active in the free agency market. However, a target that has been in their sight since the beginning of free agency seems to be slipping away. Lakers legend James Worthy recently stepped in to assure the viability of their pursuit.

The Los Angeles Lakers have been making aggressive front office moves throughout the offseason. They have already added some talented pieces to their roster, including Gabe Vincent and Taurean Prince. They also re-signed some highly promising players who served them in their Western Conference Finals run. However, they still lack a viable backup center. This is where James Worthy believes 27-year-old Christian Wood can fit in.

Worthy recently weighed in to support the Lakers’ pursuit of the 6’9 big. “Part of the business is taking risk on players that may have, you know, stumbled but if they know how to get up, you might want to take a chance on them,” said Worthy, referring to Wood’s off-court antics.

He further added, “Christian Wood’s got to know his worth. This is where I think the money gets in the way sometimes… Know your worth, know where you are… He’s passing up some opportunities… He’s not that total complete but he does have a lot of talent on the horizon… He’s got a great opportunity, don’t mess it up.”

Worthy had some appreciation for Wood, also endorsing a potential deal that will land him in Los Angeles. However, how will the $5M-worth free agent fit with the Lakers if he signs with the franchise?

Christian Wood fits in like a final piece to the jigsaw

The Los Angeles Lakers have one of the most dynamic frontcourts in the NBA. With LeBron James and Anthony Davis at the helm, their starting forward position is well established. However, they need a big on their bench to support their second unit. This is where Christian Wood comes in.

The Lakers acquired Jaxson Hayes during free agency to fill up the backup center spot. However, they may need a more reliable option to improve their offensive end. Wood fits right into this scheme, with his versatility in scoring.

The 6’9 forward is an efficient three-point shooter with some impressive handling skills. His ability to be a physical presence in the post as well, plus the added spacing he provides, will complement the Lakers’ superstar, Anthony Davis’ style of play splendidly.

Wood had a strong season with the Dallas Mavericks in 2022-23, averaging 16.6 PPG and 7.8 RPG. He also shot an impressive 37.6% from beyond the arc, something that is much needed for the Lakers. With this fit, it is only justified that the Lakers are looking to sign the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels alum. Big Game Worthy too seems sold on this move.
