The Dallas Mavericks have stumbled to a disappointing 3-8 start this season, and much of the blame has fallen on GM Nico Harrison, who now faces the threat of dismissal. His role in the blockbuster trade that sent Luka Doncic to Los Angeles for Anthony Davis made him one of the most hated individuals across Dallas. Yet, not everyone shares that view. Warriors star Draymond Green, for one, sees it differently.

The four-time NBA champion recently shared his thoughts on the entire situation. Discussing the injuries and overall direction of the Mavs, Green argued that GM Nico Harrison isn’t the only one to blame. Yes, head coach Jason Kidd and majority owner Patrick Dumont are part of the problem. “Coaching has something to do with that,” he said on the latest episode of his podcast.
“Not saying J-Kidd is not doing a great job, but I’m saying like y’all just want to go point the finger at Nico because that was a storyline. Now, let’s make that a storyline again. That is whack to me. The team that he put out there. So next year they come back that full team that Nico intended to be out there, and they have success. Then what? You can’t tell me they don’t have good players.”

The Golden State Warriors veteran made a fair point. What would critics say if this same Dallas team found success next season? Green also argued that Nico Harrison is being unfairly scapegoated, noting that major trades don’t happen without ownership approval. “Let’s not forget no general manager is trading Luka Doncic without the owner’s approval and without the owner’s belief,” Green said.

“We can run the scapegoat play. Cool. Go ahead. I understand what you’re doing. I understand that. So, we can run the scapegoat play. Or, and I’m not blaming Patrick Dumont for that, but I think that’s what everybody else is trying to get him to do. Yes, the Dallas Mavericks didn’t; they just had their first game not selling out since 2001. I understand all of that. But Rome wasn’t built in a day.”

Draymond Green’s point, as it stands, hints that if Harrison was given the liberty to construct a win-now, defense-first roster, he should be allowed to see it through. Well, that’s not a bad shout from the Warriors star, as injuries have certainly impacted the Mavericks this season. However, that won’t matter anymore as Patrick Dumont has already decided on Harrison’s future.

An insider reveals that Nico Harrison’s era in Dallas is nearing its end
Even though the Warriors’ No. 23 has extended his support toward Dallas Mavericks GM Nico Harrison, it seems it won’t be of much help. ESPN’s Shams Charania has revealed that Harrison’s four-season-long tenure at Dallas is ending as soon as today. “BREAKING: The Dallas Mavericks and owner Patrick Dumont are expected to fire general manager Nico Harrison at a 10 am Central Time meeting on Tuesday, sources tell me and Tim MacMahon,” he reported on X.
By the looks of it, the “Fire Nico” chants that echoed around the American Airlines Center on Monday are soon to become a reality.

While Green has a point, as he says that Nico Harrison isn’t the only man responsible for the team’s downfall, the Mavericks GM hasn’t done himself many favors. After all, he was the one to come out and talk about Luka Doncic’s weight and how, to him, the future isn’t ten years away but just three or four years away.

All of those bold claims have come back to bite him, as Nico Harrison’s tenure as the Mavericks GM is coming to a disastrous end. As for the franchise, now they’ll need to focus on the season ahead and try to make the most of it. In fact, more so, because they’ll now have to make their decision of letting go of Nico Harrison after a dreadful 3-8 start look like a smart decision, unlike their decision of trading away franchise player Luka Doncic last season.
