Steve Kerr made history ahead of tonight’s clash. Following Eric Spoelstra’s epic announcement, a few weeks ago, the Golden State Warriors followed it up with an even more impactful update tonight. The Dubs champion head coach Kerr has reportedly agreed to a two-year contract extension with an annual salary of $17.5 million per year.

This contract extension will make Kerr the highest-paid coach in the history of the league. The San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich held the previous record with $16 million per year. But, technically, Popovich will still earn more than Kerr annually as he holds the office as both president and coach of the Spurs.

After this update, the 9x NBA Champion will be committed to the San Francisco franchise till the 2025-26 season. While Kerr extended his contract only for 2 years, Spoelstra extended his contract for 8 years with a whooping value of $120 million, leaving him with an annual salary of $15 million.

Two months into the 2023-24 season, the Miami Heat shook up the NBA world with the Eric Spoelstra announcement. Spoelstra became the highest-paid coach in the history of the league with a $120 million contract. Notably, Popovich had a 5-year contract worth $80 million.

The 53-year-old has been around the Heat Culture fold for a long time. He entered the franchise, working in the video room, and slowly worked his way up to the HC position. It was definitely a reward for his loyalty, and he also gave back 2 championships and four conference championships in return.

Meanwhile, the story of Steve Kerr is quite different. He entered the Bay Area team in 2014 and went on to become the most successful coach in recent times. In his 10-season-long affiliation with the Dubs, he helped the team reach 6 finals and win 4 championships.

However, it was only a matter of a few brilliant decisions and the Dubs were on track to chase the ring. Kerr took a few risky calls like benching Klay Thompson and pushing Jonathan Kuminga and rookie Brandin Podziemski to the starting line-up. And just like that, the Dubs turned around, winning 9 of their last 11 games.
