Thaddeus Young has finally signed with the Phoenix Suns, a franchise that had been after him for a decade. After two close calls in 2014 and 2021, Young is now preparing to make a name for himself in the Valley alongside his old buddy and former McDonald’s All-American Game rival, Kevin Durant. The connection between Young and KD is one of the most fascinating aspects of this trade as the two athletes have known each other for 20 years since they were budding prospects in high school.

And reminiscing about their encounter at the McDonald’s All-American Game, Thaddeus Young revealed how he pissed off 14x All-Star and did not let him sleep.

In an interview with the NBA, Thaddeus Young and Kevin Durant relived their clash in 2006 at the All-American Game that highlighted the skills of future NBA players such as Durant and Young. While Durant’s side won the game, Young reminisced about a moment when Durant was furious with him as he was not sleeping nor was he letting KD sleep. Young said, “I remember we becoming friends, and actually roommates at Top 100 camp, and he was pissed because I wasn’t going to sleep. I was talking to my girlfriend who’s now my wife at this time all night and he was pissed because he couldn’t get his sleep.”

And now, as they have reunited with the Suns, bringing their common history and intense energy to a championship-caliber team, the tale of Young’s arrival in Phoenix is one of dedication and patience. In 2014, when the Suns were preparing for a surprising playoff run, they came close to acquiring Young in a trade but fell short. Following that, in 2021, when the Suns were on their approach to the NBA Finals, they tried to acquire Young once again but failed again.

Entering his 17th NBA season at the age of 35, there are concerns regarding Young’s ability to be a valuable asset for the team. However, he is confident in his ability, particularly in a small-ball team where he can use his flexibility to create plays on both ends of the floor. So, as the Suns continue their quest for the championship, only time will tell if their move to acquire Young was a smart decision or not.
