There were rumors that Russell Westbrook could be swapped for Kyrie Irving. Westbrook did not have the best of seasons for the Los Angeles Lakers. And the Lakers, with all their star power, didn’t make the playoffs this year. 

Due to this, there were rumors that he could be traded by the Lakers. But the newly appointed Lakers head coach, Darvin Ham, has assured that Westbrook is part of his plans.

Still, there were rumors around Westbrook and Irving. While the Brooklyn Nets did manage to seal a playoff spot, they were still comfortably swept by the Boston Celtics in the first round.

Kyrie scored 39 in Game 1 against the Celtics, but other than that he was pretty much shut down.

For the regular season, Kyrie averaged 27.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 5.8 assists. But the problem is Irving only played 29 games the whole season. Now there are reports coming out stating that Kyrie Irving could opt to stay with the Brooklyn Nets.

Kyrie Irving is one of the highest earners in the league. He played a total of just 33 games, including the regular season and the playoffs. He missed a lot of games due to the strict Covid-19 protocols.

So when there were reports that suggested he could activate his $36.5 million option with the Nets, fans lost their minds. Here are some of the reactions:

After the Nets were eliminated, Irving stated that he would return to Brooklyn. He even said that he and Kevin Durant will manage the franchise together.

Irving said, “In terms of my extension, man, I don’t really plan on going anywhere, so, like I said, this is added motivation for our franchise to be at top of the league for the next few years,” Irving said. “When I say I’m here with [Kevin Durant], I think that it entails us managing this franchise together alongside Joe [Tsai] and Sean [Marks]…”

Kyrie also admitted that he was a distraction to the team, and it was an emotional season for him. He disclosed that he felt like he was letting the team down when he wasn’t able to play.
