On 18th October 2022, the Golden State Warriors celebrated their 2021-22 season triumphs with the ring night ceremony. Their leader, Stephen Curry took center stage and thanked DubNation for their constant support. While doing so, he shed light on WNBA Star Brittney Griner’s situation in Russian exile. Back then, Griner was sentenced to nine years in prison by a Russian court for having cannabis oil in her belongings. The two-time MVP gave Griner a shoutout and said, “Brittney Griner’s birthday is today. She’s 32 years old. We want to continue to let her name be known.” A few months later, President Joe Biden announced that Griner was coming back home through a one-for-one prisoner swap deal.

The Russian Authorities agreed to release Brittney Griner in return for Victor Bout, a notorious arms dealer, through a prisoner exchange program. While this move received a lot of criticism, the NBA community rejoiced. With this in mind, the four-time champion had a message for the POTUS during his teams’ visit to the White House.

During this session, Curry took the opportunity to thank the Biden Administration for their efforts. While stating that Griner is an important member of the basketball community, he said, “It means a lot to know that she’s here and home safe with her family.” A video of this was interaction posted by the BBC.

However, this isn’t the first time Curry has expressed his gratitude toward the administration’s efforts. Moments after Griner’s release in December, the eight-time All-Star gave a shoutout to President Biden during the Sports Illustrated awards night.  He said, “Shoutout to President Biden and his administration, and all the athletes, activists, and people who used their platform to speak on her behalf.”

An Update on Brittney Griner

Brittney Griner has been home for over a month now. During this time, Griner has announced that she would be returning to play for the Phoenix Mercury in the upcoming WNBA season.

As the community waits in anticipation of her return, Griner has been spending time with her wife, family, and friends. She has also been training with her team. On Martin Luther King day, Griner and her wife, Cherelle, made their way to Arizona’s MLK Festivals.
