Since being drafted third overall in the 2017 NBA draft, Jayson Tatum has been the face of the Boston Celtics. It may have taken him a few years to really hit his stride, but he has developed into a star player for the Celtics. Although, even after earning millions from his NBA paychecks, Tatum does not have control over his wealth. Yet, his mother has admitted that she had still lost some leverage over her son.

Jayson Tatum’s mother controls the majority of his money and his assets. Tatum is allowed to spend money he makes off of endorsements but needs the permission of his mother for any big purchases. Yet, Tatum’s mother Brandy Cole-Barnes is slowly seeing her son develop into a man and more.

Jayson Tatum’s mother is starting to lose leverage

Jayson Tatum’s mother, Brandy Cole-Barnes got pregnant and gave birth to Tatum while she was finishing her education. And even though her son went on to become an NBA superstar, her importance towards education was never lost.

Tatum went on to study at a St. Louis school named Chaminade College Preparatory. He then made his way to Duke University where he played a year with the Blue Devils before declaring for the NBA draft.

Unfortunately, Cole-Barnes has admitted that she has lost some leverage over her son. While Barnes’ desire is that Tatum to go back and gets his degree, her son points out that he makes more money than her, despite her mother having four degrees.

She wants to see Tatum flourish more than being a basketball player

Brandy Cole-Barnes has seen her son flourish from a young boy to a man in front of her eyes. She also had to privilege to see her son become a leader not only to an NBA franchise but to a whole city as well.

But one more thing she has seen in front of her eyes is her son transitioning from being just her son to a father. Jayson Tatum became a father within the second year in the league as his son Deuce Tatum was born.

Cole-Barnes had the privilege to see her son be a father while also giving her the pride of being a grandmother. She also said, “I never thought possible would bring him more joy than basketball. I think Deuce helps put things in perspective for him.”
