The Los Angeles Lakers needed a revamp of the team and they have started the rebuild, if not of the team, then in management. The Lakers chose Darvin Ham as the replacement for Frank Vogel, who won them the NBA title in 2020. However, he led a disappointing season in 2021-22. The assistant coach of the Bucks Darvin Ham has plenty of experience to take the next step. He has been with the Bucks since 2018 and has had different stints as an assistant coach. 

Before Bucks, he was also an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks. In fact he was also an assistant coach of the Los Angeles Lakers during the last few years of Kobe Bryant as a basketball player. This will be his first job as head coach of any team. But that does not mean that he lacks experience. He has had a fair share of experience with the Lakers and Kobe.

Darvin expressed his gratitude about the time he spent with Kobe Bryant as assistant coach of the Lakers, “Oh man, it was great and god rest his soul man. We spent a lot of time together on the practice floor, individual workouts, watching film, watching clips. And if I can go back and forth with him and have him disagree with me. And then double back and tell me I was right and we all know how stubborn he was. It just gave me a wealth of confidence in myself as a coach. And you know just seeing him and him sharing with me the different ways he saw the game.”

Darvin Ham also commented on how managing a team is a two way street. He named the players who he has worked with. He shared how it’s not only him ‘barking’ orders and leading the players but also a learning process for both sides. Players and coaches alike.

Why is Darvin Ham the right fit for the Lakers?

It was clear that Frank Vogel was not able to manage the roster. Be it Anthony Davis’ constant injury struggles or Russell Westbrook’s poor form, nothing worked in his favor. Even when all three, LeBron James, AD, and Russ, were fit and on the court, it was not something extraordinary. Clearly Frank Vogel was not able to bring out the best out of the roster, which in all honesty was filled with decent talent and loads of experience.

Darvin Ham is a players’ coach and someone who believes in managing players. It is expected of him that he can manage the stars in the roster and assign their roles to great effect. The Lakers and LeBron would expect Darvin to bring the best out of every player and make them click together. Despite the embarrassing season, the squad is not beyond repair.
