Utah Jazz legend Karl Malone is easily one of the most powerful and gifted scorers in the league’s history. His position on the NBA’s All-Time scoring list speaks volumes of his greatness. Although, having a perennial point guard in John Stockton along with him surely helped. While Malone is often forgotten when speaking about the greatest power forwards of all time due to his lack of rings, players still remember the 14x All-Star fondly. Seeing players like LeBron James and Jayson Tatum imitate him on the court filled Malone’s heart with love and emotion.
Karl Malone recently sat down with Detroit Pistons legend Isiah Thomas for an episode of ‘Basketball Stories’ on NBA League Pass. The two greats talked about multiple aspects of the game, including one of their altercations from back in the day.

Thomas mentioned how he saw the Jazz legend pulling off his iconic dunk for the first time. Malone pointed out that he was never a flashy player but decided to try something new on a fastbreak once. It got to such a point that Malone’s dunk, with one hand at the back of his head, went on to be known as the ‘Mailman’ dunk. While talking to Thomas, the 2x MVP mentioned how he saw younger players imitate his dunk.
He mentioned LeBron James doing it the first time when he played for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Then Malone brought up Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum imitating the ‘Mailman’ recently.

After his retirement from the league, Malone went absolutely off the grid. One of the most iconic players in Jazz history, Malone was riddled with controversies due to some off-court incidents during his final season with the Los Angeles Lakers.
It wasn’t until this year’s All-Star game that Malone decided to make an appearance in public among the media. Despite his controversial actions, the two-time MVP is one of the greatest to ever play basketball.

However, Malone does not get enough credit for his contributions to the game. If it wasn’t for Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, Stockton and Malone may have had a couple of championships to their names, and probably would’ve gotten the recognition they deserve.
Nevertheless, the ‘Mailman’ will always be a legend in Utah.
