Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry is one of the best players in the NBA and arguably one of the best players of the last decade. However, he wasn’t blessed with a lot of athletic capabilities growing up as a skinny kid and had to work his way around to make big strides in the game. While he struggled, Curry faced a hard time facing failures and being ridiculed all the time. The Dubs superstar recently opened up on his journey so far and revealed some grueling details of his long journey to make it to the NBA.

Steph revealed that he wasn’t playing all that much while he was with the youth team. As a result, he once was confronted by his mother, Sonya Curry. She delivered a motivational speech to her son which gave him the reality check he desperately needed.

Sometimes, all you need in life is a reality check. This applies perfectly well to four-time NBA champion, Stephen Curry. During his time with the youth team, he rarely played. Although he believed in himself and his shooting ability, the game required the physicality which Steph lacked. When Curry was 13 years old, he had a bad performance in one of his AAU games. In fact, he had 12 turnovers that game! This urged his mother, Sonya, to sit down her eldest son and have a heart-to-heart talk.

Describing the talk with his mother during a recent Esquire interview, Steph revealed, “My mom gave me a… I call it a motivational speech, now. But it was exactly how you explained it—something I didn’t want to hear at the time. She basically told me that nothing was going to be given to me.”
