“This Is All I Have Been Working Up For”: Michael Jordan Once Admitted Beating His Close Friend Magic Johnson Meant Much More Than Beating His Rival Isiah Thomas in 1991

Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls defeated Magic Jordan’s Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA finals in 1991. This victory meant more to Jordan than any other wins. Because he had spent a long time preparing to beat his close friend Magic Johnson. Michael Jordan and Isiah Thomas had one of the most heated rivalries at the time. But Jordan had something else on his mind.

The 1980s and 1990s were unquestionably the NBA’s golden era. That generation produced some of the most memorable moments, rivalries, and relationships. Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson are two of the greatest players in NBA history. But they were close friends as well. Both the titans elevated their respective franchises to unprecedented heights and won numerous titles.

In the 1980s, there were only two names on everyone’s lips: Lakers and Magic Johnson. Johnson won five NBA championships, all with the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1980s.

Michael Jordan was preparing for the day when he would face Magic and the Lakers

During an interview years ago, Michael Jordan shared the story of facing the Lakers in the 1991 Finals and said, “This is all I have been working up for, it’s an opportunity to play against what everybody considers to be the best, it was Magic Johnson.” Jordan shared his wish to play against the Lakers and defeat them. He further added, “The mighty mighty Lakers at the time were one of the powerhouses in the 80s and now we we’re starting the 90s so if you are gonna make a statement, you have to make a statement against the best.”

In the 1991 NBA Finals, the two titans clashed, Jordan vs. Johnson. The Chicago Bulls won the NBA championship by defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in four games to one. Jordan was awarded MVP of the NBA Finals. Jordan fulfilled his ambition of defeating the great Lakers and his close friend Johnson with all the glory on his side. And it meant much more to him than beating his rival, Isiah Thomas.
