Michael Jordan invoked fear in his opponents. He was an elite trash talker who never backed down from a fight, may it be physical or verbal. So obviously, when a 9x All-star snubbed Michael Jordan and crowned a Celtics legend as “the coldest sh*t talker” in a recent podcast episode, the co-hosts were very surprised.

So, who is this Celtics legend who’s apparently an even better trash-talker than the great Michael Jordan?

In a resurfaced YouTube Short from a few months ago, 9x All-Star Gary Payton expresses his view on who the “coldest trash talker” of all time is in the NBA. The co-host of the podcast show “Dub C and CJ Mac Show” asks the former NBA star, “Who talked the most sh*t? Was Jordan a big sh*t talker?”.

The 9x All-Star responded, “He would. When he’d get it going and you go at it. To me, he wasn’t like that. He’ll say stuff and get down at you. But he wasn’t a sh*t talker. I think Larry Bird and Reggie Miller was the biggest sh*t talkers.”.

As both the co-hosts yelled, “What?”, the 9x All-Star stayed firm in his stance. Payton explained, “Larry Bird was the coldest motherf*****. Larry Bird would tell you, “I’m going to take you over to this corner. I’m going to dribble two times. I’m going to hit your a** in the face. And it bet not touch the rim. And if it do, I’m going to come right back and do it again until it touch it. That’s how Larry Bird used to get down.”.

The former NBA star added, “Larry Bird was the coldest sh*t talker ever man. And he back it up because he was so cold. You know what I’m saying. Ask people about him. He used to say, “Boy you can’t do sh*t to me. I’m too motherf***in good for this. I’m going to give you a Christmas present. This jumper in your face!””.

Larry Bird’s trash-talk speaks volumes about the confidence that he had in his abilities. Infamous himself for his elite and ruthless trash-talking skills, Gary Payton had high praise for the Boston Celtics legend.

Gary Payton’s legendary trash-talking stories

Considered one of the greatest “trash-talkers” of all time, Gary Payton once had a “trash-talk” battle with the great Michael Jordan himself. In the 1996 NBA finals, Jordan led-Chicago Bulls faced off against Gary Payton’s Seattle SuperSonics. Gary Payton in his later interviews says, “There was a lot of everything. A lot of ‘f*** you’s. We were going back and forth with the ‘f*** you’.”.

In another instance, Gary Payton trashed talked MJ after he got drafted in 1990. In his first preseason game, he trash-talked Jordan, who was sitting on the bench and wasn’t even playing the game. Michael Jordan got the last laugh though because he dropped 35 points on Gary Payton in their first regular season game against each other.

He did not show mercy even to an almost retired Scottie Pippen. When Scottie was playing for the Portland Trailblazers after his iconic championship run with the Chicago Bulls, a young Gary Payton ruthlessly trash-talked the 6x NBA champion. Payton told Pippen during the game, “You ain’t nothin anymore, Scottie. Where’s Mike? Where’s Mike at? I ain’t scared of you now, Scottie.”.
