If his college football career is anything to go by, Colorado retiring Shedeur Sanders’ jersey at their spring game just last month was proof enough. That was, of course, until the reality hit differently as the draft began five days later. “What is happening to Shedeur Sanders is the most stunning and disgusting development in NFL draft history,” Skip Bayless, veteran commentator, had called out the NFL at the time. Once considered a top-5 pick, Sanders had to wait, and then wait some more, until the Cleveland Browns showed some grace on Day 3 by selecting him as the 144th overall pick. Nothing was going in his favor, and unfortunately, with the latest update about his new jersey number, it’s safe to say tides haven’t changed a tad. Turns out, Sanders will not be sporting the deuce that he has worn his entire career.

Way before going to the NFL, the Browns’ QB started working on his personal branding. During his Colorado days, the Browns’ QB cultivated a multifaceted brand using his jersey number. #2, “2legendary.” Launched in 2021, 2legendary offers a customized merchandise line and a podcast for a Gen Z audience. Sanders’ branding game was so strong that he went on to partner with Nike, Google, Topps, Mercedes-Benz, KFC, and a few others for an estimated $5.1 million. Now, with the Browns’ latest move, all of this seems to be going in vain.

Even though it was a late draft, Shedeur’s independent apparel line, 2legendary, was officially sold out within a week of his draft. Speaks volumes about Shedeur’s market pull. Still, despite knowing what wonders the 23-year-old can do if he were given #2, the Browns did not offer his desired jersey number but #12. Instead, Cleveland has given No.2 to DeAndre Carter, who has rocked seven different jersey numbers with 6 different teams and never once wore No. 2. Furious with the move, Hellion ‘Boog’ Knight, the head of operations for Young Money APAA, the agency tied to Sanders, did not hold back on the Browns.
According to NFL Rookie Watch, Boog was “up in arms” over the Browns’ decision. He straight-up said in a since-deleted Instagram story, “There’s no way Cleveland Browns should’ve gave #2 to anyone else,” Knight said in the post. “Especially to a WR who haven’t worn #2 before in his career. But we knew that was coming, so we ain’t flinching about it. It was expected. Take it, smile, then MAKE IT LEGENDARY! KEEP GOING.” Interestingly, while Boog may have considered this a disrespect, Shedeur’s jersey number 12 is not just a coincidence but a notable choice, because Tom Brady also donned it for the entirety of his career, and Sanders being a mentor to him is no secret.

On the other hand, Shedeur’s Colorado teammate, Travis Hunter—no. 2 overall draft pick this year, has been awarded #12 by the Jaguars, the same number he wore in college. But here’s where it gets stickier for Sanders. Boog isn’t a certified NFL agent. Neither is Deion Sanders, obviously. That’s part of the bigger story behind Shedeur’s draft slide. Without a traditional agent navigating the NFL backchannels, Shedeur’s stock quietly dipped, even though many had him as a potential QB2 and a Top 5 lock earlier in the year. And now, this jersey mess feels like more salt in the wound.
Even though Sanders didn’t get No. 2, he isn’t tripping. In fact, the man’s already on a mission to turn No. 12—his new Browns number—into a Cleveland classic. He recently told a bunch of local school kids, “My goal is to bring a Super Bowl to Cleveland.” A phase promised by many, kept by none. Man really said that with a straight face. The Browns, a Super Bowl? Shedeur got heart. We’ll give him that.
Tom Brady gives golden advice to Shedeur Sanders amid the draft fall
Let’s rewind for a sec. Remember how the entire pre-draft buzz had Shedeur Sanders as one of the top names on the board? Yeah, well, reality hit different. When that draft day came around, Shedeur didn’t just fall—he plummeted. Slid all the way to the fifth round like someone yanked the brakes on his hype train.

And guess who tapped in during that freefall? The GOAT himself—Tom Brady. “Day 2 matters more than the draft,” Brady told Shedeur on the IMPAULSIVE podcast. “I was 199. So, who can speak on it better than me? Use it as motivation. You’re gonna get your chances. Go take advantage of it.”
That’s real talk from a man who turned being overlooked into a dynasty. Brady has been mentoring Shedeur for a while now. Despite being a minority owner of the Raiders, Brady wasn’t pulling strings for Shedeur. But ironically, Tom Brady did have some influence when North Dakota’s Cam Miller got scooped up late in the draft. Funny how that works.
Tom Brady’s message wasn’t just fluff. It was a call to action. A reminder that draft position doesn’t mean squat once the cleats hit turf. If anything, this whole thing lit a fire under Shedeur. He’s got a chip the size of Boulder on his shoulder, and he is aiming to make Cleveland remember his name.

Look, No. 12 might not be what he asked for, but you best believe he’s gonna wear it like a crown. And if the Browns ever make that Super Bowl run Shedeur was talking about, best believe No. 12’s gonna be hanging from the rafters one day. So yeah, the disrespect is real. The agent’s fuming. The number is gone. But if there’s one thing Shedeur Sanders has been raised to do, it’s to respond.
