Never lose faith when No. 17 is your quarterback. That’s exactly what Bills‘ Josh Allen said with a smirk on NBC’s post-game broadcast, Week 1. He had taken notice of the empty seats at Highmark Stadium after the Ravens controlled the game for almost 55 minutes. The Bills looked beaten and got outplayed to the point that ‘Next Gen Stats’ calculated their probability to win as low as 1.1% with 8:37 remaining in the fourth quarter.

They were trailing 40-25. That was until the Bills decided to flip the script with one of the most improbable comebacks in the league’s history. But truth be told, Allen’s team was losing hope, too. Ask RB James Cook all about it. “It’s nuts,” Cook confessed on ‘The Rich Eisen Show’. “Like, I ain’t even know, I thought the game was over. We kept fighting, and something happened. And I don’t know what happened.

“It just, I don’t know, it just clicked. I’m like, ‘hold on’… I looked up, looked down, looked back up, game was over. We was winning.”

The quick turnaround in the game happened with barely four minutes left. The Bills were still trailing 40-25. On 4th and 2 from the Ravens ‘ 10-yard line, Allen threw towards his two teammates waiting in the end zone. But Dawson Knox, at the three-yard line, got his hand in between the trajectory to almost end the game right there. The ball, however, ricocheted backwards and fell into the arms of Keon Coleman in the end zone. Suddenly, that Sunday night matchup that was clearly on the Ravens’ side became a one-possession game.

Then, Ravens’ Derrick Henry fumbled on the ensuing drive for only the second time in his last 605 carries and lost the ball to the Bills. Just then, a possible win became more apparent to HC Sean McDermott. And to the sidelines, too.

“It was crazy,” Cook told Rich Eisen about the sideline conversations. “Cause (RB) Frank Gore Jr., he was like, ‘Oh, we got time to come back! We got time to come!’ That was like when we just had got stopped and so I’m like, ‘I done lost all hope.’ When he done said that, I’m like, ‘Oh yeah, I got to, we got to come back now!’ And then it just happened.”

With under two minutes remaining, Allen zipped passes across the field to get into field-goal range, converting a key fourth down with a scramble that left the Ravens’ defense stunned. He then set up Matt Prater for a 32-yard field goal as time ended, sending Highmark Stadium into disbelief.

Sure, the Ravens dominated for 55 minutes, but the Bills’ reigning MVP QB still managed to become the first player in the NFL’s history to have 250+ passing yards & 2+ rushing TDs in any single quarter of a game.

Winning 41-40, the Bills team also made NFL history as the first squad to come back from a 15-plus-point deficit with under four minutes and win the game in regulation.. They scored 16 points late in the game.

And though Cook felt like he had no idea what was happening towards the end, he played an important role in the win. Comebacks need quick drives, and a 51-yard gain surely helps. So, when Baltimore missed two tackles on a third-down dump-off to Cook, the player was able to get in extra yards, which helped set up a touchdown.

Looking back at the game, all Allen had to say was, “Have some faith next time.
