Tuesday’s breaking of Commanders‘ trade of Chase Young to San Fransisco 49ers invited mixed feelings. On one hand, some believed the franchise shouldn’t have let go of the former defensive rookie. While some from the management reportedly greenlighted the deal in an answer to his indiscipline. Young himself was reportedly disappointed about his separation from fellow defensive end Montez Sweat, who was traded to the Bears earlier the same day.

But amid everything, there’s some good news that might sound inspiring to Young. His new team, the 49ers, is also home to his former college senior Nick Bosa who they drafted in 2019. The formidable duo separated in 2018 to take part in the NFL draft has been brought them back together again on the biggest stage of all.

Chase Young reunites with Nick Bosa after 5 years

When the news broke out of Young’s removal from the squad, a few takeaways from his 3-year-long Commanders career might have flashed before his eyes. From winning the prestigious Defensive Rookie of the Year award in 2020 to playing in his first Pro Bowl, it has been a short but memorable journey for the DE.

Understandably, one can sense the disappointment Young felt after the dismissal post an injury-riddled 2022 season. But one can also imagine his excitement about entering the new destination. Visioning the recreation of a connection older than his NFL days, the DE might have felt happier when he learned that his ticket was booked from the national capital to San Francisco.

Young joins his predecessor, 2019 defensive rookie of the season, Nick Bosa in the 49ers. The former has always looked up to the latter, and the following clip shared by Dov Kleiman on X (formerly, Twitter) is evidence of that.

“He keeps his hands working, always. He’s different than us, bro”, Young could be seen being visibly mesmerized by Bosa as captured during a game of the 2022 season. “He gonna have 20 this year”, a seemingly confident Young further added that the 49ers defensive end will catch the magical 20 sacks mark in the season looking at his performance. Bosa, eventually, stopped at 18.5 sacks, gaining praises all over.

Nick Bosa, however, is much more than just Young’s predecessor. He is also Young’s former teammate and college senior, and the duo played college football together at Ohio State University, forming a greater bond.

Chase Young’s old bond with Nick Bosa

Nick Bosa was a 5-star recruitee of the Ohio State University’s football team, nicknamed the Buckeyes. He played for the team from 2016 to 2018 before withdrawing for the 2019 NFL draft. In his sophomore year, Bosa got Young as his teammate, and the duo soon became arguably the NCAA’s most feared DE partnership.

Bosa registered 77 tackles, 29 tackles-for-loss, and 17.5 sacks during his 3-year stint for the team, and Young had better numbers at 98 tackles, 40.5 tackles-for-loss, and 30.5 sacks before following his Senior’s footsteps in 2020. The duo combined for 12 sacks in 2017 and 14.5 in 2018. Both continued their college prowess in their rookie years, winning the Defensive Rookie of the Year award in successive seasons.

The Commanders now remain a part of the past for Young, and potentially an even more colorful future awaits ahead. Added with his trusted mate Bosa next to him, the duo could be the league’s fiercest defensive unit. But much of that is still assumptions. Young has to show up and improve the 49ers’ season following the Bengals’ loss, which may have been a little too much for Bosa alone. The former teammates potentially take the field together on November 12, would look to set Young’s debut for the side against the Jaguars right.
